The above photo features Sheila Groves, Eta State President of the Delta Kappa Gamma International Society for Key Women Educators (left). This past Tuesday, she presented the Order of the Long Leaf Pine to Jane Mitchell. In order to be a recipient, one must have made a significant impact on the State of North Carolina through exemplary service to their communities, above and beyond the call of duty. The award for Dr. Mitchell is much deserved. She is a charter member of the Beta Delta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and has worked faithfully for the organization since its beginning in 1966, including serving as its president. While Dr. Mitchell retired from the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1996, after 38 years of teaching, she remains professionally active, still, twenty years since her retirement. Her positive influence in Beta Delta is far reaching. She continues to participate actively in the chapter and is an inspiration and great resource to other members. Congratulations, Dr. Mitchell, on receiving this award. We hope to be in your company sometime when you give the following toast:
Here's to the land
of the long leaf pine,
The summer land
where the sun doth shine,
Where the weak grow strong
and the strong grow great,
Here's to "down home",
The Old North State!
The award was presented at the Beta Delta meeting, held in the First Baptist Church of Greensboro with Beta Delta President, Dr. Ann Pember, presiding. Alice Hill, fellow recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, and approximately twenty other members were on hand for the special occasion.
