Really, Really Free Market

Today's post features the Really, Really Free Market on Buy Nothing Day, alternatively known as Black Friday. The market was held at the People's Market and Gardens in Glenwood. In the above photo, you can see Kathy Clark working away folding items at one of the giving tables. People were spread out across the parking lot and free items were coming and going all day long. The children who attended really seemed to value the treasures they were picking up. There were some arts and crafts items and a few toys. Hopefully, the market will continue to grow and even more people in need, and people in "want", will continue to enjoy the day.

A big thank you to Kathy who also had to take the leftovers to the Goodwill Store and she learned quickly what the Goodwill will and won't accept. Car seats and strollers are no-no items. Fortunately, she didn't have any pets to re-home, just a few unwanted and unclaimed baby items. It was was nice seeing everyone out enjoying the neighborhood. Indeed, Glenwood was shining with fellowship this past Friday. If you want to sponsor a community event like this, what are you waiting for? A few Facebook and community bulletin board announcements, a place that will let you set up, some tables, and a plan for leaving the space item and litter free and, voila, you have a Free Market. Thank you Kathy; thank you Glenwood, thank you Greensboro, for making this event happen! Thank you for everyone who came out and gave and took this past Saturday. Fun was had by all!

 

Glenwood United Methodist Church

The above photo of the Glenwood United Methodist Church was taken on the corner of Glenwood Avenue and Grove Street. On Buy Nothing Friday, people were coming and going from parking lot that housed the Really, Really Free Market on Buy Nothing Day, this past Friday, November 27th. The above photo features the tail end of the free market where people brought and traded goods. However, there was no obligation to donate to receive goods. Kathy Clark spearheaded the event and it was a booming success. 

The church is the background has been a Glenwood landmark for decades. The steel, A-frame roof is readily identifiable. Unfortunately, we couldn't find a church history online. However, with a little sleuthing, we did find information through the North Carolina Vertical File Index through the reference department at UNCG (see, here). An article in the Greensboro Daily News on August 07, 1938 mentioned the tradition of celebrating "Church Loyalty Day" and the fact that the church was over 40 years old. That would date the church to the late 1800's. Does anybody have a concrete date?

In the meantime, we're sure the church members would approve of the generosity of the people who donated goods to the Really, Really Free Market. As a matter of fact, likely the church community was involved in this event. Happy Sunday!

First Anual Back Friday Bike Ride

In an effort to fight Black Friday consumerism and to burn off a few Thanksgiving calories, the above group headed to the greenway in Greensboro for a bike ride. They ended up biking about 18 miles through Bur-Mil Park, Old Battleground, and Country Park. The weather was very agreeable as it was over sixty degrees and sunny. Two of the four are members of Fish on Wheels practicing on the off season so they'll be ready to tackle the 2016 Tour de Tanglewood, next September. The four reported having a successful, uneventful ride. Everyone finished strong and there were neither flat tires, nor bumps in the road.

Hopefully, the above quartet will, indeed, make this an annual event and the two Fish on Wheels riders (on left) can convince the other two riders to participate in the Tour de Tanglewood- and dress with a little FOW pink and orange flair. If you didn't get to exercise outside yesterday, there are plenty of options today. For one, mountain bike riders are riding in the Burn the Turkey Event (more, here) in Greensboro. It is anticipated that temperatures may reach the seventies. 

If old man winter doesn't roll in soon, trees may just start budding and we'll head right into spring.

Black Friday Frenzy

This two-story, inflatable Santa beckons patiently from the side of North Battleground Avenue. The trees in this tent are owned by Sunnyside Farms. Sunny side Farms has been selling trees from Ashe County for fifteen years. This family-owned business, owned by the Elliots, works hard to keep their customers returning year after year.

Many families in Greensboro have the tradition of putting up a tree on Thanksgiving weekend. A lot of families also have the tradition of going to the Craftsmen's Classic this weekend. Now in its 42nd year, this art and craft show has a great reputation for having top quality merchandise. Craftsmen's Classic, Christmas tree, Black Friday shopping, and college football on TV should keep you busy if you are in Greensboro. Wonder if the Elliots will have time for anything other than selling Christmas trees!

Let Us Give Thanks

Happy Thanksgiving. Let us give thanks for all that we have and reflect on the good things that have happened throughout the past year. As we enter into the frenzy of the upcoming month, let us pause today and find a way to enjoy a day with as little consumerism as possible. We took the above photo, at Anthropologie in Friendly Center six years ago, probably about the time that Anthro was just getting established in Greensboro. While the photo is old, the message is still fitting. We're glad we at Greensboro Daily Photo are here to bring you a photo a day of our great city. We're glad that we are in North Carolina on Thanksgiving and not having to travel. Can you see the outline of the state of North Carolina in the window? We're glad we can call North Carolina home.

If you want to hold out on the consumerism a little longer, tomorrow, on Black Friday, there will be a Really, Really Free Market at the corner of Grove Street and Glenwood Avenue in the heart of the Glenwood neighborhood of Greensboro. Greensboro's own Kathy Clark will be hosting this event, where you can bring things to give away, you can take things that you want or want to give as a gift. You can learn how to make gifts for people. What you CAN'T do is spend money, as there will be nothing to buy and you are under no obligation to trade things. Even if you are going to "cheat" and do some shopping, consider stopping by between the hours of 11:00 am and 3:00 pm to cheer Kathy on with this great undertaking. 

We're glad people like Kathy Clark are around to help us gather and enjoy each other's company without having to spend money. Finally, we're super thankful that you are reading our blog. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at GDP!

T is for Toni

Toni Knight arrived in Greensboro as a student at UNCG in the 1960's and has remained here doing good things for the community for over fifty years. She majored in social studies, taught for about 8 years, and returned to the University for a master's degree in counseling. Toni was so well liked by the faculty and staff at UNCG that she was asked to lead the advising center for the Pedagogical Studies Department. While her position evolved over time, she spent a career giving students sound advice about classes, details about their respective majors, and even some sage advice about career choices. 

One of Toni's many good deeds along the way was the starting of a group she called Tomorrow's Place. It is a support group for women to sit and talk about life, whether it be working through problems, adjusting to life changes, dreaming about the future, or just discussing the present moment. For the first year, in the mid 1980's, the group met over soup at Toni's house. This was a time when the women's movement hadn't really started and there weren't many options for organized support for women. Today, the group meets at the First Lutheran Church of Greensboro and the format is a brown-bag lunch. Tomorrow's Place continues to help women celebrate the good times and endure the difficult ones. Three original members still actively participate. Tomorrow's Place doesn't have a website and mostly gets new members through word-of-mouth. The group has also formed a book club and pot-luck supper club. These women love being there for each other.

For the last five years, Toni has worked part-time for East Lawn Elementary School in Burlington. She is the volunteer and community coordinator, working for one of her former Teaching Fellows, whom she advised while he attended UNCG. She is also involved in Eldercare and is committed to helping her 90-year-old mother continue to live at home. Together, she and her husband, Tom Smith have three children and seven grandchildren- the joy of their lives. 

Today is ABC Wednesday and for our A-Z People Series, "T" is for Toni. However, if we had to pick a letter of the alphabet to represent Toni, it would be "C," for "caring" as she is such a caring person. With respect to what Toni likes about Greensboro, she loves how beautiful the city is and the fact that even the poorest neighborhoods are clean and litter free. We are so lucky she has made Greensboro her home.

 

Cafe Pasta

 Cafe Pasta was the choice venue for this family's intergenerational celebration. This street scene showcases the beauty, not only of this happy family, but also the beauty of State Street. It resembles the streets of resort communities. It is nice to see these owned businesses from Elm to Church Streets. Have you been to State Street lately? Cafe Pasta is a four-star, Italian restaurant and it has great lunch specials. They also cater. If you get a chance, head over for lunch and see if you can recreate this photo with your family. Cafe Pasta has been around for thirty years. Here's to another thirty- and then some!

Greensboro Arboretum

The above entrance to the Greensboro Arboretum is inviting and really sets the tone for what you will see in the arboretum. This entrance arch was designed and constructed by Greensboro sculptor Jim Gallucci, and was installed, May 2014 on the Ashland Drive entrance.  It frames the trees beautifully.

The photo below was shot behind the trellis, looking through to the autumn leaves. You can see the play of light between the metal, flora, and shadows. If you get a chance, stop by and see it for yourself. While you are at it, you can walk a few more feet and see the knit bridge in Lindley Park. If you go on December 5th (6-9pm), you can participate in Candlefest 2015. The girl scouts will light over 4,000 luminaries along the sidewalks of the arboretum. This year for Candlefest, there will be live music, Santa, and other activities, all free as long as you bring some canned food to donate for Urban Ministries. 'Tis the season of so much going on!

St. Pius X is Growing

St. Pius X was build in the mid-1950's and it has been growing steadily for the past sixty years. Above, is a view of the North Elm Street side of the church, where new construction is under way. Around back, on the Cornwallis side, another building is also being built. The Simmons Parish Life Center and the DeJoy Primary Education Center will add much-needed space to the church and school, especially given the fact that membership is growing. According to their June newsletter, between October, 2014- May, 2015, 140 households joined St. Piux X. If this growth trend continues, approximately 20 new households a month, before you know it, they'll be expanding again.

The construction will consolidate parish operations and eliminate the need for the parish office to be split between the Elm Street facility and the offices, four blocks away, on Elm Street. If you like Sunday drives, head over and check on the progress. The growth is impressive, especially given the proximity to downtown Greensboro. Reverend Monsignor Anthony Marcaccio is loved by the congregation and he is a significant force behind the growing popularity of this Catholic Church, located at the edge of Irving Park.

St Pius X

Feelin' Groovy

This view of the Kirkwood neighborhood at Lawndale and Cornwallis shows the great character of Greensboro's streets. The sun was shining brightly on this Volkswagen bus in front of the little house with the white picket fence. The scene reminded us of the lyrics from the 59th Street Bridge song by Simon and Garfunkel (Feelin' Groovy) which is also the title of a 1967 pop album by the music group Harpers Bizarre. Greensboro may not have been completely immersed in the happy-go-lucky side of the hippie movement, as the city was really immersed in the Civil Rights Movement. However, we're betting there were some people around town who were, indeed, feelin' groovy!

Savor these warm moments of fall as you run around getting everything ready for Thanksgiving this weekend. This is the last big break for college students before they come back to take finals and finish for the semester. Public schools will be in session on Monday and Tuesday and then students will have a five day weekend. May we all find a little more time for fellowship this weekend. If you are looking for a meaningful way to spend tomorrow afternoon, The Piedmont Interfaith Council will have their annual Celebration of Giving Thanks tomorrow at 4pm in Dana Auditorium on the campus of Guilford College (read more, here).

Sunday Drive into Old Greensboro

Sunday drives are so wonderful. Last Sunday, we were driving around Kirkwood and stumbled on this scene that looks like it could have been Greensboro from the 1950's. The old car (Bel-Air?), the house with a picket fence, a single car garage with a door that you have to open by hand, and, of course, a dog in the yard. This gentle giant, in true Great Dane style, watched our every move when we were on his turf. Of course he could have jumped over that fence in a heartbeat; but, we didn't bother him and he didn't bother us. 

The setting sun was so beautiful that day. We hope you have a chance to get out this weekend and enjoy the beauty of our city. The people of Greensboro love their pets. If you want to make friends quickly, admire a pet and meet the owner. See if you can take a picture with no signs of the 21st century in it.

Tristan's Quest at Artmongerz

Last weekend, Artmongerz Gallery on South Elm Street held a fundraiser for Tristan's Quest. Tristan's Quest is a non profit organization that works to improve the quality of life for children and adolescents who have emotional, behavioral, social, and academic challenges. Tristan's Quest helps through providing professional education, family support, and direct services*

Fifty people gathered and for a meal catered by Sweet Basil; Tracey Marshall and other artists hosted the event. Greensboro has quite a reputation for bring people together for important causes and for volunteerism. Good food, good art, for a great cause. Who can ask for more? A big thank you to all involved!

S is for Sheila

Sheila Groves, originally from Lenoir, NC, came to Greensboro on a Broyhill Scholarship in the 1970's. Fortunately for Greensboro, Sheila stayed put. She majored in early childhood development at UNCG and dedicated her professional career to teaching in the public schools.  First, Sheila taught Kindergarten, many years at Sedalia, Millis Road, and Pilot Elementary Schools. Upon retiring from the Guilford County Schools, she became an instructor at UNCG. 

Now, in retirement, it seems as if she is busier than ever. She is member of Delta Kappa Gamma, an international society of women educators. She is a member of Greensboro's Beta Delta Chapter, where she served as president. Now, she is the president of the state chapter, Eta State. In the above photo, Sheila is seen at a working dinner for the organization, held at the Lone Star Steak House on High Point Road. Sheila always has a warm smile on her face, even when she is in the throes of a mountain of paperwork. As you can see, she is in her element when doing things for others. She loves working with this organization of like minded women who are so committed scholarship and to making a difference in the realm of public education- here and abroad.

While in college at UNCG, Shelia made many lifelong friends and, every year since graduation, the same weekend in May, a group of eleven dorm friends travels to the beach for a weekend together. They come from different cities throughout the United States with very different careers, however, they are united by the strong bond they built while in Greensboro and at UNCG. When not traveling with family, friends, or Delta Kappa Gamma, Sheila docents elementary school groups for the Greensboro Historical Museum.

Most people don't know that Sheila used to live in a warehouse downtown, on Davie Street, in the 1980's, way before gentrification, before Greensboro's downtown buildings were renovated, and before Davie Street burned. Sheila loves the fact that there are so many opportunities to volunteer in Greensboro and that she has met many great people in Greensboro as a result of her volunteering.

Craft Fair at Yanceville Curb Market

This past Sunday, the Craft Fair was held at the Yanceyville Curb Market. From handmade soaps to pottery to lamps and food goods, so much was available for purchase, and items were reasonably priced. Some of the long-time staples like Charlie Tefft, pottery, and Kim McEntee, handmade primitive dolls,  and Mr. Mullins, honey products, were selling on Sunday. When you frequent these shows, they feel like an afternoon spent with friends- behind and in front of the counter. Live music, being played out under the carport, lilted through the marketplace.

The next all-local holiday show will be held on Sunday, December 6th from 11am to 4pm. Most of the venders from Saturday will return for that date, too.  They usually have over 100 artists at this juried event. If you live in Greensboro, you, too, could be part of the above-photographed fun. We can't wait!

 

 

 

Knit the Bridge

The above photo, taken from the Greensboro Arboretum, shows three of the many dedicated Lindley Park community members who spent Saturday afternoon attaching knitted pieces to the bridge over Wendover Avenue. The community must have known what they were doing, because several people honked to acknowledge them as they drove under the bridge. Over 100 volunteers have been knitting for three months to make this event a reality. Together, they knitted over a million stitches to cover all of the 77" rails. They also had plenty of leftover pieces to knit the guard rails and the telephone poles leading up to the bridge. The group had a community grant to help underwrite costs of the project, whose purpose was to unite the neighborhood geographically and to build a sense of community. That, it did; and then some! 

John van Lindley, Civil War soldier, Quaker, and nursery owner in Greensboro in the 1800's would be proud to know that the neighborhood, named after him, was hosting such an event. Lindley's nursery covered much of the land where Lindley Park is located. He was known for being a leader among the progressive and public-spirited men of the community. While Lindley was not one to try to draw attention to himself, he would have loved the spirit of togetherness that is nurtured in Lindley Park that extends from the Walker/Elam area, all the way to Holden Road. The photo below will help you see how the project is situated above Wendover. As we read this post, we're wondering is the knitters' homes seem quiet today without the tap, tap tapping of knitting needles.

Palm Street Christian Church

Palm Street Christian Church is located just off of State Street. While this is not the original building, the architecture is typical of small, community churches today. Usually, they are either wooden churches painted white or red brick. Usually, they have spires with crosses at the top, so that they are visible, beacons from afar. 

The above photo was taken on the Bradford Street side of the church, late Saturday afternoon. In the center of the photo, an exuberant, young church member can be seen dashing off to get something. This church was founded in 1905 and was rebuilt in 1950. The surrounding neighborhood is known as McAdoo Heights and was at one time part of a lively textile mill community. While the make-up of the neighborhood and church have changed over the last century, both are still lively. Here is a photo of the front side of the church. The pastor is Don Clement and he should be there to deliver a spiritual message at 11:00 a.m. today, if you are looking for a church in Greensboro. Bestway of Lindley Park

Today, we present another Lindley Park photo, taken from the corner of Elam and Walker Avenues. Above, the gray building is now Fishbones. It used to house the Blind Tiger. To the left, the turquoise building is the Bestway Grocery Store.  This building has been a Lindley Park grocery store since 1947- almost seven decades of serving up bread, milk and other staples. It is the longest continuously running grocery store in Greensboro. Bestway began as an A&P Grocery Store in 1947 and later became a Bi-Rite. In 1972, it became part of the Bestway chain. At one time there were 14 stores in the Virginia and North Carolina area. As of 1987, the Walker Avenue location is the only Bestway left, and it is thriving. Since 2008, it has been owned by Roger and Nancy Kimbrough. Thanks to them, the store is keeps getting better and better and more and more of a local vibe.

We're betting Bestway will be hopping this weekend, after the Yarn Bombing of the Walker Avenue Bridge today in this neighborhood that has been thriving since 1917.*  Have a great weekend, everyone.

Autumn in Lindley Park

Lindley Park is one of those neighborhoods where everybody knows your name. The above photo was taken during the Art in the Yard event on Beechwood Street. Not only neighbors, but art lovers from around the city traipsed through the yard in search of fellowship and great art. In Lindley Park, being neighborly matters. This is the neighborhood that sponsors a farmers market on Saturdays. And, tomorrow, is the day they are hosting the long awaited yarn bombing on the Walker Avenue Bridge over Wendover.

In the meantime, as we look at the above photo, it reminds us of everything good about fall: People getting together, while the leaves are still pretty and old man winter has not yet reared his ugly head. Aqua furniture is the icing on the cake. We sure wish we had a back yard this cozy! It has the feel of a cabin in the North Carolina mountains, yet it is right here in Greensboro. Happy Friday the 13th!

 

Veterans Day

Greensboro's super patriotic house on Holden Road, across from Starmount Country Club, treated our community to a Veterans Day remembrance. The plywood cutout represents the Raising of the Flag on Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945, Joe Rosenthal took a photograph of five US marines and a Navy hospital corpsman raising a U.S. flag atop Mt. Suribachi in Japan. The Marine Corps War Memorial in Washington, D.C. was sculpted from the photo. The above plywood piece was carved with the image in mind.

We hope that yesterday, and everyday, you remembered our veterans. Wherever you live, whatever you believe, veterans are people who have taken an oath to defend the people of their country. We thank the family on Holden Road for providing Greensboro with a tangible reminder for every virtually every holiday. Here's to Remembrance Day that commemorates the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front on "the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month."

R is for Renee

 

Today’s ABC Wednesday featured person is Renee Swink, who is peeking out from behind a piece of her art. We first met Renee at Artstock 2015 in October where she was showing her paintings at the Steinberger Artists Center at 712 Summit Avenue. Renee’s art caught our attention because it was colorful and playful. She loves painting animals and slice-of-life scenes, and not always on canvas! She especially enjoys painting chickens and cows and putting a touch of magic realism into her paintings. Renee is a student of Denise Landi, at the Sternberger Collaborative. 

Renee grew up in Ohio but moved to Greensboro over forty years ago with her husband, Greensboro native and author, Tim Swink. She met Tim, the love of her life, when he handed her a flower as she walked past him in Myrtle Beach. Renee and Tim enjoy quiet evenings at home, cooking, and entertaining friends. Renee loves Greensboro and describes it as a city, carved out of a forest. (What a great, and accurate, image)! She finds the location ideal, perfectly situated between the mountains and the coast.

For the past 23 years, Renee has been the house manager for philanthropist and businessman Mike Weaver and his wife Katherine. The Weavers call Renee their fairy godmother. She magically makes things happen at home so that the Weavers can spend even more time doing great things for our community.

Crape Myrtle in Autumn

Crape myrtle like dogwood, magnolia, and wisteria, is a dominant southern landscaping plant. They are very beautiful when in bloom during the summer. In fall, leaves transform from green to the red, orange, yellow range, and, as seen above; berries turn a dark brown. The berries punctuate the ends of the branches and add texture to the lingering foliage. In new neighborhoods, builders often place a crape myrtle or two on every lot. While they are beautiful, they shed blooms in summer and leaves in fall. Like magnolia trees, they seem to be shedding something constantly. However, like the magnolia, they are beautiful and worth the trouble.

The beautiful bush in today's photo is found in the parking lot of the Greek Orthodox Church on West Friendly Avenue. The one in our Greensboro yard is at the upper range of height limit, close to 40 feet tall. Many people lop them off and keep them under 10'. As Greensboro approaches the gray days of winter, this crape myrtle is here to remind us that beauty and color can be found in the tiniest details in nature.

 

 

Knit the Bridge

Lindley Park neighbors have been knitting up a storm. They are planning to yarn bomb the Wendover overpass at Lindley Park at Walker Avenue. Kathy Newsome is spearheading "Knit the Bridge" with funding from the Building Stronger Neighborhoods Foundation and lots of person power from her Lindley Park neighbors. The inter-generational group had their last meet-up yesterday on Beechwood Street at the above house, a sort of ground zero for the yarn bomb squad. Knitting meet ups, however, have been in many places, including the Rec Center in Lindley Park, Common Grounds Coffee Shop, The Corner Market Farmers' Market and Shelf Life, the art supply store in Irving Park.

Even if you aren't involved in this community building, art appreciating, heartwarming project, be sure to drive across and under the bridge to see the usual dull gray bridge transform into a riot of color. November 14th is the scheduled installation. It is Greensboro's first commitment to such a large knitting project. The group even had a nice write-up in the November O. Henry Magazine.  (Knitted) Hats off to Kathy and her crew for spreading this initiative to Greensboro. We hope the knitting, purling, casting on and off, is everything they want it to be.

Persimmons Grove A.M.E. Church

Persimmons Grove African Methodist Episcopal Church is located on Dolley Madison, between Friendly Avenue and Market Street. It was founded in 1882 and named for a persimmon grove, near the church cemetery, off of Highway 421 (Market Street) near the airport. The denomination was founded in Philadelphia in 1816; so the Greensboro church was established less than 70 years after the denomination was founded and less than 20 years after the end of the civil war.  The above church building was erected in 1958.

Native persimmons used to be a seasonal fruit that people greeted with great anticipation at the time of the first frost. They were one of those foods that people could gather in the fields and take home
to use in their family's special recipes. Tomorrow, the Persimmons Grove is having a special homecoming event. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they served breads, soups, and puddings made with persimmons! Today, the congregation is rather small now and, on average, there are fifty people at a service. Everyone who attends, if not literally family, feels like family.  If you make the 11:00 service tomorrow, we're betting that the Rev. Debora Smith will make you feel welcome. We wish the church had a website and hope that someone is documenting the church history. We thought the name was unique to this North Carolina church; however, there is a Persimmon Grove in California, Kentucky, and Alabama (and maybe more).

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Dora Was NOT Here (This is Doc McStuffins)

Recently, the Junior League of Greensboro held a truck day in the parking lot of Fresh Market at Jefferson Village. It was extremely well attended and was a booming success. The above photo captures the spirit of the event. Children gleefully went up to meet Doc McStuffins (not Dora, as we originally posted) en route to hanging out on service vehicles. Even the junior fire chief above was captivated with the role model's plush and glowing persona.

We are about to enter the madness of the Diwali/Veterans Day/Thanksgiving/Christmas/Hanukah/Kwanza/New Year time of year. There is plenty to do in Greensboro during this holiday cycle. We will all need to find a way to pace ourselves the next month and a half.. Happy Saturday! 

 

Fleming-Shaw Transfer and Storage, Inc.

Driving behind the Piedmont-Triad International Airport (the West Market Street side) can be fun, especially at dusk. When the sky is growing dark and businesses have closed for the day is a peaceful and relaxing time. It is the urban photographer's equivalent of a nature walk. Fleming-Shaw Transfer and Storage, Inc. is located at 7712 Boeing Drive, such an appropriate name for a street near the airport. Fleming-Shaw has been in the heavy haul and rigging industry since 1934. They have 48-state authority and, according to their website, can arrange shipments to all 50 states. 

Fleming-Shaw sounds like a wonderful company; however, the above building had a 'for sale' sign in front of it. Hopefully, the company is relocating in Greensboro. We only learned of this company when sitting in the parking lot marveling at how beautiful a simple metal building can look against a sapphire blue sky at dusk. If you like visually appealing type, you will appreciate the cursive name against the ALL CAPS of the company description.

It's Hay Ride Time!

Fall and winter are perfect seasons for hay rides in North Carolina. The above hay ride was part of the fall festival at Bur-Mil Park. Adults and children of all ages enjoy sitting together and riding around on a trailer pulled by a tractor. It is one of those traditions of yesteryear that are still enjoyed today. It is really common for working farms, that are open to the public, to offer hayrides. Since Guilford is the top county (out of North Carolina's 100) for having horses, hay rides are especially popular here.

Even if there isn't a hay ride, children love hanging around farm equipment. For Halloween, Summerfield Farm had a tractor and tread event for Halloween. Online, there are 30 places listed that sale horse hay in the Greensboro area, so we're sure there is not shortage of hay in the area. Find a vehicle, buy some hay, invite some children, and you will be the hit of your neighborhood. Plus, you will be building memories that last a lifetime. Q is for Quaneisha

Quaneisha Payne is an inspirational young woman from Greensboro. Her great smile, as seen above, is one of the first things you notice about her. It reflects her positive outlook on life. Quaneisha has been a lifelong member of Warnersville, Greensboro's historical, African American community just south of downtown. She helped start the first community garden and farmers’ market in Warnersville. Quaneisha has great leadership skills and loves to initiate projects and see them to completion. Although she is not yet 20 years old, she has already been involved in many groups in Greensboro. The Smart Girls Leadership Academy and the The National Conference for Community and Justice (NCCJ) are two organizations where she has logged countless service hours. She is also an advocate for adolescent health.

Quaneisha is a graduate of the Middle College of UNCG in Greensboro and now attends Johnson C. Smith University, where she is studying political science. In October, she accompanied a group from her university to Washington D.C. on the Million Man March. She was proud to be part of a movement committed to the common good and to bringing about change.

About Greensboro, Quaneisha loves the way our city is growing and developing. She loves that the town has a rich history and cultural diversity. Quaneisha reminds us that we have the arts, historical museums, beautiful scenery, and many institutions of higher education. What she misses, while away at college, is being able to participate in annual events such as: the fair, the NCA&T homecoming, the ACC sporting events at the Coliseum, and food from Beef Burger and Stamey's Barbecue. Persimmon Festival

This is a scene from the Colfax Persimmon Festival last year. This Saturday, the 8th festival will be held from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The festival is part demonstration of old time ways, as seen in the photo above, and part getting out and enjoying a Guilford County autumn. Likely, brunswick stew will be served up in a cauldron, as will chicken soup. If this year is like previous years, persimmon pudding, muffins, and pulp, will be offered and will probably sell out within the hour. Extracting persimmon pulp from a domestic persimmon is a process of removing about 50% peel and seeds to get the 50% pulp. The whole process is messy and sticky, but as for the pulp, there is nothing like it!

The only challenging part of the day is parking. There is parking at Shady Grove Church, west of the festival, and a shuttle is provided (for a suggested donation). The festival itself it $7 and, once inside you will want money for food. However, the day is more about enjoying the old time ways than a profit motive. We're hoping the same vendors, old-time musicians, and re-enactors will be returning. They were great.  Here is a link to the festival.

Roles Change

This billboard was seen between Burlington and Greensboro. It states that "Roles Change" and that AARP will be there to care for you. The photo is very thought provoking. We've been thinking a lot about visual literacy and the role of photos in helping people make meaning. Billboards have "flash text" on them; the reader needs to get the message in the few seconds they look up as they are driving. If you get a chance, show it so a child and see how long it takes them to understand the picture even if they can't read the Spanish. If they can't get it, tell them what it means.

Whether you are young or old, the sign is food for thought. While Greensboro has a lot of great options for senior citizens, it would be nice to know that family will be there when you need them.

Glorious Dogwood

Today is November 1st. It is hard to believe that it is the 11th month of the year. The above photo is the second photo we took in the green space between Moses Cone Hospital and North Elm Street. It is a dogwood tree and the leaves have changed from green to red. Today is theme day for the City Daily Photo community and the November theme is ephemeral, or, something that doesn't last for a very long time. Autumn colors are definitely ephemeral. As a matter of fact, these leaves may already be gone. 

Happy Sunday. We usually feature something spiritual on Sunday; a church steeple, a synagogue, a scene in a churchyard. However, sometimes the glory of nature is enough and can be very spiritual. Regardless of what you believe, we hope that you will enjoy the beauty of Greensboro this time of year, and realize that the wonders of nature are is a gift; something bigger and more beautiful than we could ever hope to create.
