The Holy Trinity Community Garden, Established 2009, is a big, peaceful open space in downtown Greensboro. The garden is located at 209 West Smith Street. Each year, its 34 raised beds produce approximately 900 pounds of food that is donated to food banks. It is one of 208 North Carolina Community Garden Partners.* The Holy Trinity garden is located on a mere quarter of an acre, yet is is a peaceful space with giant wind chimes and birdhouses and flowers and, as seen below, a great view of the iconic JP building.
These community gardens do a nice job of bringing people together. It is amazing how much can be harvested from these small plots. If you know of some idle urban land, it is worth investigating the possibility of developing a community garden. Greensboro is lucky because we have so many, schools, neighborhoods, civic organizations and faith-based organizations committed to community gardens. Happy Sunday! Next time you are on Smith Street, look for the shiny gray sign!
