This past weekend the Guilford County Extension Livestock Show Committee and the Guilford County 4-H Livestock Club hosted the third annual Guilford County Junior Livestock Show at the Guilford County Agricultural Center located at 3309 Burlington Road in Greensboro. The show is an early stop on the 2015 4-H Farm Credit Showmanship Circuit which concludes at the State Fair in Raleigh in October.
Youth from across central North Carolina compete on the Sandhills Circuit, showing steers, heifers, goats and sheep at events in 12 counties. Participation is open to any active 4H-er anywhere. The young competitors are justifiably proud of their animals and the hard work they have put into raising and preparing them for showing. The highlight of every show is the showmanship competition where the 4H-ers are judged on their handling and knowledge of their animals. Livestock judges individually question each competitor while requiring them to maneuver their animals around the competition ring.
In the photo below, Jordan Carroll of Richmond County stands ready to respond to the judge's requests during the Senior level showmanship competition. Jordan is a rising senior at Richmond County Senior High School and the Early College at Richmond Community College. He is also a star on the Sandhills Circuit, having won last year's Senior division. Jordan claimed the blue ribbon in Greensboro as well.
Congratulations to all the young people for their accomplishments in livestock agriculture. Next week the circuit moves to Stanley County in Albemarle. Good luck to all the competitors!
Ah yes, the beginning of fair season signals the end of another summer. Take the good with the bad.
