Tis' the season of black and yellow garden spiders. Arigope aurantia is also known as the writing spider. When you see the zig zag formation of the web above, it is usually a female spider. Each night, the spider consumes the interior part of the web and rebuilds it each day.* The garden spider likes a clean, orderly web. We have one in our Greensboro garden, and it is fun to watch. Should we name her Charlotte? They mate once a year and after which the male dies. So far, she is there.
According to the North Carolina spider database, we have 31 species of spiders. First, we are amazed in this Internet era how much information we can access with the click of a button. Second, we are amazed that there are so many varieties of spiders in North Carolina and we know so little about them. If you get a chance, head outside and see if you can find any spiders. As much as Greensboro residents love vegetables and flowers, there are plenty of the eight-legged critters out there!

Quite a critter. We tend to only see smaller ones here.
