Today, we see a forsythia bush that someone has recently planted in Greensboro. They seem to thrive here. Forsythia, native to Asia, is actually a member of the olive family. These deciduous shrubs are early bloomers and a sign that spring has arrived. The plant is named after 18th century Scottish botanist William Forsyth* We're wondering if this is the same family for whom neighboring Forsyth County is named.
At any rate, if you are planning to plant anything in Greensboro, it is officially the season for planning, purchasing, and planting. As for forsythia, deer aren't particularly attracted to forsythia, something to consider when planting in the Greensboro area.** As seen in the above photo, the bright yellow blossoms are a standout and when the sun catches the blossoms, they are accentuated even more. Happy Monday!

It is the flowering yellow blossoms that mean spring to me.

The forsythia are coming out here. I just planted my balcony boxes this weekend. Let's hope something comes up!
