Last night was the Piedmont Old-Time Music Jam at Gibb's Hundred. About 11 people were playing acoustic instruments off to one corner of the pub. People sat around for some eve before Friday fun. Two well-behaved canine friends were in attendance. One onlooker was doing needlework, another was crocheting; all to tunes that have been passed down, played by ear, from generation to generation.
The genre, old-time music, has always served as a great form of entertainment in North Carolina, since the 1700's; however, recently, is gaining in popularity in Greensboro. UNCG offers a course, MUS 377 Old-Time Music Ensemble through its ethnomusicology program. If you want to learn more about old-time music, David Lynch's website is a great place to start. Alternatively, you can attend the open jam sessions every other Thursday at Gibb's. It was a great group of people and a great way to celebrate the almost-weekend.
Here is a Piedmont Old Time Music jam. Musicians are playing Julianne Johnson, several years before Gibbs Hundred became a reality. But it gives you an idea of what you will hear if you attend a jam session. Bring an instrument be part of the entertainment.
I shall give it a listen! I know there's been a great deal of studying the music of that region.
