Hyalyn Lamps is an outgrowth of Hyalyn Pottery that began in Hickory, North Carolina in 1947. As North Carolina's furniture industry grew, evolved, and shrank, HyalynPottery in Hickory closed. However, an offshoot, Hyalyn Lamps, opened in Greensboro in 1985 in Cotton Mill Square, on Spring Garden Street at Merritt Drive. Cotton Mill Square was demolished; however, Hyalyn Lamps survived and is located at 2921 Battleground Avenue. Above, you see just a fraction of their inventory in the Battleground location.
For the above photo, we didn't take a picture of the people shopping at Hyalyn, because a customer was sharing her family problems with one of the long-time employees. The employee was showing great empathy as she was finishing the transaction. Local businesses are like that. People know your name, care about what is going on in your life, and know you well enough to know what you might like to purchase and what is not your style- or price point. Hyalyn Lamps sells lamps, bulbs, finials, and shades. Additionally, they repair and rewire lamps. Recently, they have started featuring art by local artists; paintings that look great with your lamps, and jewelry that looks great when you turn on the lights!
Today is ABC Wednesday and for our A-Z Local series, L is for Lamps, Hyalyn Lamps!
I guess you've shined a light on the subject today.
