Last weekend, Greensboro artist Jerry Cartwright had several of his pieces of art displayed in his little camper out in front of Artmongerz, his studio and gallery. Cartwright, a retired social worker, is one of the three new owners of Artmongerz, which is located in the 600 block of South Elm Street. Cartwright puts together fabulous assemblages with found objects. He can take a few dozen nick nacks and a couple of vintage photos, secure them in a repurposed wooden box, and leave you thinking you are looking at Aunt Ethel's tribute to her son who died in the war. He can take religious artifacts, glue them among pieces of scrap metal, surround them with some old wood and a few streaks of paint and leave you convinced that someone put together a board of items gathered on a pilgrimage. Unfortunately, according to Cartwright, those pieces don't sell well in the Greensboro market. Fortunately, his abstract paintings, like the one featured above, are quite popular.
Cartwright has amazing talent with a putty knife and acrylics. Somehow, he has just the right color combination and knows just how much paint to slather on a canvas. Even better, he is more than generous with teaching his technique and in encouraging others to try their hand at art. See Jerry's work at Artmongerz, and if you are lucky, you will get a chance to see him creating a painting. Ask to see his found-object pieces while they last.
The work he has here looks fascinating!
