Campfires & Constellations

This past weekend, Campfires and Constellations performed at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh. The five members, all from North Carolina, and all students at UNC Chapel Hill, rocked the house with their Americana/country/outlaw sound. The group writes most of the songs they perform. Ernest Thompson, the banjo and pedal steel guitar player, hails from Greensboro, as does the band's producer and manager, Carter Fourqurean (not pictured).  From left to right, band members include Ernest, Stephen (in the back playing drums, shirtless), Charlie, Corey, and Dan. The energetic quintet put on quite a performance at the Lincoln.

Campfires and Constellations  has an album release party scheduled in Chapel Hill for April 17th. In the meantime, you can listen to their driving sound, here. Maybe we can get C&C to play in Greensboro before they go on tour this summer. It is nice to see a homegrown, North Carolina band gain recognition beyond the State. And hats off to the local boys, Ernest and Carter who got their start in Greensboro. Happy Monday! For many, it is time to put the weekend concerts on hold and get back to work!

Zen

Zen is a form of Buddhism that emphasizes meditation and intuition. Zen meditation is gaining ground in Greensboro. As a few examples, there is a local meet-up group for people who practice Zen enlightenment and thought.*  The Deep River Sangha, founded in 1999 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro, meets regularly. Also, Zazen, silent Zen meditation, is held every Sunday at 10am at Scuppernong Books on Elm Street.

The above photo aspires to represent the balance, harmony, and peace so valued in the Zen reflective experience. It was taken at Boba House Vegetarian Restaurant on Tate Street. The chrysanthemum was on the table and the lotus chandelier is reflected in the glass tabletop. The photo reminds us of the writing of New Age author, artist and Zen practitioner Natalie Goldberg, who spoke in Greensboro this past Thursday. She said that every object has the potential to become a painting. For us, every object has the potential to become a photograph. Trying to capture the spirit of Zen for our Sunday readers, we offer the chrysanthemum/lotus photo.

Happy Sunday; happy meditating, praying, thinking deeply. Look around, in Greensboro and beyond. Beauty can surface where we least expect it.

Blue Cowboy & Indian Invade Elm Street

Cowboys and Indians have taken over the window of the Guilford Building at 301 South Elm Street. We're not sure exactly whose assemblage this is, gracing the window of a place that was formerly the Greensboro Bank and Trust Company. The impressive building was the second tallest in Greensboro when it was built in 1927. The architect for this building was the same one who designed the Jefferson Building. The building with provenançe has gone kitsch.

By 1927, Western film was a thriving industry and names like Boris Karloff and Gary Cooper and Westerns, like  "The Meddlin' Stranger" and Gary Cooper "Nevada" were delighting movie-goers. Perhaps the window is a nod to this bygone era. More importantly, it is fun to see things that exude creativity and set one's mind to imagining. Who on earth spent all of this time finding and assembling this scene worthy of a short story- or of a Western?  The more we examine the scene and notice the sameness of the blue, the more we start suspecting the monochromatic figures were generated by a 3-D printer. Wouldn't that be a 21st century twist! Print-em out cowboy!

High Point Rowing Club 2014 Regatta

This Saturday, March 29th, High Point Rowing Club will host a regatta at Oak Hollow Lake. The high school team consists of males and females from the Greensboro, High Point, Kernersville, and Thomasville area. Saturday morning, HPRC will face off against Triangle Rowing Club. Coach Gene Kinimonth, originally from Australia, wants to add a little old-world elegance to the event. Therefore, you'll see ties and bowties and the fastest crews will earn vintage silver punch cups for this inaugural regatta which, will become an annual event. The races begin at 9:30 am.

The above photo is not taken in Greensboro, but of HPRC in a previous season when they were just getting started. The team has grown by leaps and bounds and is an up and coming sport in North Carolina and HPRC is a fabulous team. Let's wish them luck on Saturday. Come out and support the crews if you can!

Solid Waste Transfer Station

Waste not; want not, but solid waste has to go somewhere. Do you know where your waste goes? That old couch or mattress that you don't want any more has to go somewhere. Greensboro's Solid Waste Transfer Station, located on Burnt Poplar Road, takes solid waste.* However, it can be difficult to navigate who takes what and what goes where. For example, yard waste goes to the White Street Station and it costs $40 per ton for yard waste (cash and local checks only). Both the White Street Station and the above Burnt Poplar Station take construction materials. Neither accepts hazardous waste, tires, dead animals or a host of other things. 

As you start your spring cleaning, if you do not have a truck to haul items to one of the stations, perhaps you can recruit a friend to help you get these items to their final resting place. If you head to the Burnt Poplar location, you will be impressed with how clean it looks. We must confess that in our over five years of daily photo blogging, we haven't made it to White Street. A visit is long overdue!

K is for KICKS

If you care about your KICKS, chances are you are an adolescent male. Fancy tennis shoes are all the rage and it is not unheard of to spend hundreds of dollars on KICKS and to wait in long lines to purchase a new release. The above photo was taken at a recent track meet at Southeast Guilford County High School. The track and field events were fabulous to watch and the footwear was fancy. And, socks were pretty dynamic, too. Next time you are with a group of teenagers and at a loss of what to talk about, look at their tennis shoes. If they are neon, shiny, or new, strike up a conversation about their tennis shoes, their KICKS. Examples of how the word "Kicks" is used can be found in the urban dictionary. "Those kicks are ill.  Those are the tightest kicks I have ever seen."

Gate City Lincoln Mercury

Here is the Gate City Lincoln Mercury dealership building at 303 North Church Street at Summit Avenue. It appears to be gone, but probably not forgotten. At one time, it was teeming with vehicles, customers, and sales people to greet you at the lot to encourage you to purchase a car. This location is near the Historical Museum, the Children's Museum, the Central Library and the future home of the Performing Arts Center. 

We don't know what this property will become; however, the long shadows of late afternoon loom large over the building. The front of the building, with the overhang that protects patrons from the elements, is especially charming.

Country Yard Sale

As the weather warms up, country yard sales will be popping up everywhere. Above, we see a sale in progress. It was held this past weekend on East Wendover/Burlington Road, getting close to the Alamance County line. Cars stopped and people delighted in finding blankets, socks, hardly-worn dresses, old tools, action figures, and other sundry items, just waiting to be transferred from one home to the next. As old-fashioned, North Carolina living would have it, shoppers took the time to talk to the people hosting the event. One woman said, "I told you I'd come back" as she also noticed that a lot had sold since she visited the day before. Even when people don't purchase anything, they take time to catch up with neighbors and find out what is happening in the community. Next time you see a sign, stop by and shop- for items or for community news. A little serendipitous, side-of-the-road anthropology never hurt anyone!

While the above scene is rural, increasingly Burlington Road is filling with retail, and the lines between Greensboro and Burlington are becoming increasingly blurred. Happy Monday, NOT a good day for yard sales!

16 Cents Ministry on Spring Garden Street

Every Saturday at 6:00 p.m., the 16 Cents Ministry meets under the bridge at 300 Spring Garden Street. The ministry is an outreach to Greensboro's homeless community, many of whom stay not too far from this meeting space. Attendees get a free meal and sometimes clothing and toiletries. Attendance is growing and, according to their website, the ministry reports 250+people taking advantage of the message and the meals. The above photo was taken just as people were starting to arrive to set up. By the end of the service, the space was packed.

The ministry under the bridge first began on September 15, 2012. The 16 Cents Church could use many items and, on their website, have published their wish list, which includes items at all price points.  Stop on by and hear the message of Rev. Kevin Carter and his assistants. Likely, you and your faith group will be inspired to donate something.

Photo Fun!!!

This is the first weekend of spring and all of Greensboro seems to be ready for a little spring fun. The above photo was taken in the window of Old Photo Specialists at 320 South Elm Street. The restoration experts there take new photos and make them look old. They take old photos and make them look new. Above, the five friends seem to be having the time of their life- a little wild abandon among the five young girls. The Old Photo Specialists produce archival quality photos. These memories can last forever. 

How about all of Greensboro getting together this first weekend of spring? We could all buy a great pair of sunglasses, plop down on a couch with several friends and giggle. All. Weekend. Long. We could recreate this photo. Regardless of how we celebrate this weekend, may we all find a way to appreciate the world around us, just like the young girls above.

Pleasant Ridge Farm

If you can take one more farm picture this week, we're sending it your way. Unlike so many of the other photos that show rural places slated for demolition, this farm appears to be new, or at the very least refreshed. On Pleasant Ridge Road, there is a sign indicating that produce will be available soon. It may even have said organic produce. Nothing beats a ride in the country and picking up some fresh produce.

In the above photo, you see a new, red-roofed barn, a new tractor, new piles of mulch, and farming in progress. With the blue sky and hints of trees budding out, the scene makes us want to run out and plant edibles. Today is Friday, the start of the weekend and it is officially spring. Perhaps we can all go out and plant something edible. Oh, and if you get a chance, drive by and have a look at this budding new farm, between Fleming and Stanley Huff Roads.

 

A Lewiston Road Farm

Today, we show you a farm on Lewiston Road. The business on the site is called K.C. Performance Horses. The paint horse grazes majestically circling his barn and is one example of the many fine horses on this farm. They are beautiful in every season. The red barn is picture perfect, too.

It is nice to see these rural beauties. In the above photo, the trees look so hopeful with the hints of pink, on the brink of leafing out to green. You can see from the homes behind the tree that new construction surrounds this horse farm. Let's hope it is there for years to come. Properties like this one make a country drive in Guilford County delightful. If we can get past this last little bout of bad weather, driving through Greensboro is about to be filled with visions of dogwood and azalea. Stay tuned.....

 

J is for Greensboro's Jewish Community

Moses Cone Hospital is part of the Cone Health System. It is located on North Elm Street at East Wendover Avenue. The hospital opened in 1953. Funding for a hospital began in 1908 after the death of Moses Cone. His wife Bertha began a trust fund that would make the hospital a reality. In the trust fund that was established, it was stipulated that, "no patient should be refused admittance because of the inability to pay." * From textile mills to the above hospital, the Cone family has done so much for Greensboro. As part of our Jewish community, the Cones exemplify how much the Jewish community has contributed to the fabric of Greensboro. 

According to the Encyclopedia of Southern Jewish Communities, the pioneer Jewish families, who arrived in Greensboro in the late 1800's, "have left a legacy of community and religious engagement that have sustained Jewish life in the city." Leadership, art, education, philanthropy, and a vibrant religious community are examples of the many contributions of Greensboro's Jewish community. And, Moses Cone set the bar high! Hopefully, the employees of the above hospital embody his spirit of goodness and their commitment to others would make him proud.

Stanley Huff Road

Pleasant Ridge Road in western Greensboro is one of those areas changing before our eyes. For one, we are on the seasonal cusp, between winter and spring. Spring is fighting as hard to begin as winter is to hold on. Also, the above, old yellow farmhouse, located at the Stanley Huff Road intersection, is on the market. It looks like one of those old homes that will be punched down so that apartments or a convenience store can be built in its place.  The horse, out grazing, may be looking at that house for about the last time. Guilford County is still known as horse country; so, likely horses will be around a little while longer along the outer edges of Guilford County. What do you think would be a good use for the old farmhouse? As for "Stanley Huff," white pages dot com identified fifty-one people with that name in the USA, none of whom lives in Greensboro. We're wondering if this farmhouse was ever known as the Old Huff Place.  Do you know a Stanley Huff, the Stanley Huff ? 

 

Photo Shoot on Sandy Ridge

 Last Friday afternoon, the Colfax Custom Frames Shop on Sandy Ridge Road was the backdrop for a photo shoot. This bluegrass/stringband was posing for a photo opportunity. We have no idea who they were and didn't want to interrupt the photo shoot to ask. Part of the joy of having a daily photo blog is the serendipity that comes with always having a camera in the car. We can't say much more about today's photo because we really don't know anything about the musicians. If you have any information, please let us know.

We featured the shop (here) five years ago. Nice to know that it is still standing. It looks like it would be a great place for a photography session.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day 2014

Happy Saint Patrick's Day, Greensboro Daily Photo readers!  The above photo is one we have in our archive of vintage photos and postcards. It was not taken by us, nor do we think it was taken in Greensboro. We found it languishing in a Greensboro antique store. The photograph is well composed and would make a good short story for an O. Henry short story contest. Are these three sisters? Irish sisters? Are they nurses? Just friends? Just co-workers? Are they in Ireland? Ireland's version of candy stripers? Do they have relatives in Greensboro? There are so many unanswered questions about these young women who remind us of Downton Abbey's Crawley sisters. 

Wherever you are, take the above trio's cue, don your shamrocks and enjoy Saint Patrick's Day. For those who have Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking, did you know that they are lifted for the holiday?* Head on out and find some Saint Patrick's Day fellowship, toast the luck of the Irish, and see if anybody you know in Greensboro is related to these fruit-peeling beauties. Greensboro may not have Chicago's kelly green river or NYC's grand parade, but there will be one hoppy, hoppin' Greater Greensboro St. Paddy's Party on  Barnhardt Street tonight.

Joseph Stella's The Virgin

Winter days are perfect for visiting museums. The above photo features Joseph Stella's 1926 painting, The Virgin. It is part of the modern art exhibit currently showing at Reynolda Museum on the Wake Forest campus. While this is showing in Winston-Salem, it is just the next county over from Greensboro and well worth the drive. As seen above, Stella's Virgin is heavenly in its balance and form. The composition is reminiscent of early Italian Renaissance paintings, yet the floral details (see below) look like something that might be found in a contemporary folk art paintings.

Joseph Stella came to the United States in 1896, at the age of 19 to study medicine. Ironically, on Friday, 118 years later, fourth year medical students from Wake Forest University were in the museum studying these paintings for a course entitled "Narrative Medicine" which incorporates a more socially situated aspect to the study of medicine. How wonderful that our young doctors will be so well rounded and, if they are as focused on their patients as they were on the intricate details of this artwork, we will be in good hands. ACC Spirit

Somebody at Bears, Balloons, and Beyond, at the corner of New Garden Road and Battleground Avenue,  must be a University of Pittsburgh alum. The balloons in the blue and gold streamer above have "Pitt Alumni" stamped on them. The ACC Tournament is in full swing in Greensboro and Pitt, a new kid on the ACC block, came all the way from Pennsylvania to beat one of the backyard favorites, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Yesterday, the Panthers toppled the 15th ranked Tarheels in the Greensboro Coliseum 80 to 75. The basketball action continues today. With UNC eliminated, tickets just might be easier to obtain.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Tournament has been held every year since 1954. For the first thirteen years, the tournament was held in Raleigh. 1967 was the first year that it was held in Greensboro. Other years Greensboro has hosted are: 1971-1975; 1977- 1980; 1982; 1984; 1986; 1988;  1995-1998; 2003-2004; 2006; 2010- 2011; 2013-2014. Greensboro is scheduled to have the tournament next year; after that, it will to to Washington, D.C. After that, rumor has it that it will be played in New York. Greensboro has had it more than any other venue, back in the days when the conference felt a little more like a backyard brawl with Duke dominating the winner's circle 19 times and North Carolina coming in second with 17 times. We'll start planning our NYC vacations now. North Carolinians are very loyal fans!

Oh, Deer

The deer in North Carolina have just about had it with winter, too. Above, we see two of the white-tailed deer that hang out in our backyard in Greensboro. Every year, they seem to get more aggressive about entering suburban yards and patios. The early March snowstorm had these herbivorous creatures grazing especially close to homes. The above photo was taken at dawn, making us wonder if suburban deer are crepuscular animals. They do seem most active during the twilight hours.

The photo was also taken at the start of daylight savings time, when the deer may have thought they had another hour before their humans and neighborhood canines were due to wake up. Until you see deer running from your yard, it is hard to imagine that their tails are 9-11 inches long, that no neighborhood fence is too high to jump,  and that they can seemingly eat their weight in plants in a single session. 

Mini-Glacier at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park

Last weekend as the latest winter storm was waning, we went to the visitors' center at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. The visitors' center is free and educational. We wanted to study up on the Revolutionary War in anticipation of this weekend's reenactment. Dutifully, the park employees had cleared the sidewalks of snow and ice. As we were leaving, and the sun was setting, we were struck by how much the mounds of snow had the translucency of a glacier. Glaciers form where snow accumulates and due to its weight, melting, and sublimates,*  crevasses and interesting contours form. The longer we looked at the mini- glacier, the more we felt more like we were at Glacier National Park in Montana than at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro. The only thing that would have made this little exercise in imagination more spectacular would have been to have had a group of Kindergarterners to share the magic with us!

Let's hope the mini-glaciers go the way of Frosty the Snowman for a good ten months and that the weather is warm and dry this weekend for the reenacters, who will be coming from all over the United States. However, the troops and military units will descend upon Greensboro this weekend and reenact, regardless of weather. While General Cornwalis and his men will defeat General Greene's troops, as they do every year, the weekend will be fun, educational, and FREE!

I is for Independence

This weekend is the big reenactment weekend at the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. The Battle of Guilford Courthouse took place on March 15, 1781, during the Revolutionary War. The battle was held, at the location in the above photo,  five years after the Declaration of Independence was signed. The park has interred two of the three North Carolinians who signed the Declaration of Independence. William Hooper, Joseph Hewes, and John Penn were delegates to the Continental Congress. Hooper was one of the orators.

In 1894, their remains were reinterred here, in the military park. According to the bronze plaque at the base of the monument, the grave of Joseph Hewes was lost.  Today is ABC Wednesday and I is for Independence, something that is valued, and fought for throughout history and worldwide.

The Creamery

The Creamery, located at 310 South Elm Street just opened this past weekend. This new kid on the 300 block, just down from Scuppernong Bookstore, serves ice cream and will soon cook up local, grass-fed beef burgers. In the above photo, some of the store's first customers are learning about the new establishment. The kitchen area doesn't appear to be quite completed yet. Decorating is simple making a statement in secondary colors. The exterior paint is purple, chairs orange and benches green. It looks as if they are keeping the exposed brick on the inside and that they will have sidewalk seating when the weather is warm. Giant letters near the front of the store remind us that it is L.O.C.A.L.

The keep it local, shop, eat, and read downtown trend is flourishing on the South 300 block. Stop by and see for yourself.  Greensboro seems to have been experiencing a little bit of cabin fever. It is time for some outdoor adventures!

Oscar Oglethorpe

Spring has sprung in the window of Oscar Oglethorpe optometry on the 200 Block of South Elm Street. However, the last bit of wintry weather snapped the very lovely tree outside the shop. Undaunted, the wonderful staff inside the store continued to serve customers all day on Saturday and by the end of the evening, the tree had been chopped into firewood and left at the curb. 

It is not uncommon for Greensboro to have an ice storm in March and this year was no exception. The town made it through the whole winter relative unscathed. Then, this last little storm hit us hard with upwards of 200,000 losing power which means no heat (for many) and for those on well water, no water. If you have recovered from the storm stop into Oscar Oglethorpe even if you don't need glasses. The steampunk, industrial decor inside the old Ellis-Stone Building is unique. If you do need glasses, the intelligent, attentive staff will find a pair of frames just perfect for your face.

Westminster Presbyterian

Westminster Presbyterian Church has two campuses, the above Friendly Avenue campus and the Lake Brandt campus. The first congregation of the church came together 127 years ago. Originally, the church was established on Asheboro Street, on what is now MLK, Jr. Drive. In 1959, services were held in Kiser Junior High School while the Friendly Avenue facility was being constructed. In 2005, the Lake Brandt Campus was added*

The congregation is an active one. They consider themselves a large church with a small-church feel. While they are active year-round, they are especially active during the Lenten season. For example, this upcoming Saturday, they have an outing planned to see the movie "Son of God" at the Regal Cinema. In the above photo (taken this past summer) the church looks quiet and peaceful, on Sundays, it still looks peaceful, just bustling with people. Notice the symmetry of the architecture.

Spring Will Come

This photo, taken this past week about sums up the feeling of desolation that can come from winter. This scene is located  just off of Highway 220 at Summerfield Road, near all of the highway construction where they are widening 220. The tree in the center has a pine tree behind it, making it look extra padded and a little menacing. It seemingly divides the two homes beside it. This is the landscape of rural Greensboro that is disappearing quickly. In the summer, when all is rich and verdant, this same scene looks quite charming. The large tree in the center will look as if it has spread its green, leafy wings from Lake Higgins to Oak Ridge. For now, it looks cold and desolate, like something out of the Wizard of Oz about to reach down and grab you. 

Likely, not only Greensboro, but also the nation will be talking about the Great Winter of 2013-2014. Or, perhaps the not-so-great winter. At least it will make us really appreciate spring which is almost always beautiful in Greensboro.

 

Slice of Americana at Smith Street Diner

Today's photo was taken at Smith Street Diner, located on Smith Street near the baseball park and Deep Roots Co-op; just behind Orell Design. Weekends, breakfast at the diner is standing room only. You get your name on a waitlist and give them a cell phone number. Diners wait in their car if it is cold, since there is no room to wait inside. The hostess calls your cell when a table is available. For those in a hurry, usually, there is a seat or two at the counter. It is really fun to sit at the counter and watch all the people come and go and to see the first-time  customers have that jaw-dropping experience of being served a plate-sized biscuit. The diners at the counter usually love talking to each other.

It is getting harder and harder to find an establishment that sells made-to-order breakfast and Smith Street even serves freshly squeezed orange juice. No brand on the market replicates the flavor of fresh orange juice. The ambiance at Smith Street can be described as warmer than an Edward Hopper painting, but slightly less bubbly than a Norman Rockwell: somewhere in-between. As the diner advertises, they are open eight days a week--  and there is no shortage of decorated, pig pictures.

H is for Hosiery Mill

Even though it is Thursday, we're sharing another H for ABC Wednesday. We thought of H for "hosiery mill" when Greensboro was snowed in. Since Greensboro was once a thriving mill town, we would be remiss in not mentioning hosiery. The above mill  is located between Lindley Park and UNCG. Almost 100 years ago, the knitting mill  was opened by northern industrialists Mock, Judson, and Voehringer.* Many of the mill workers lived in nearby Highland and Lindley Parks. Unlike the Cone Brothers, Mock, Judson, and Voehringer didn't build mill housing, but depended on workers finding housing in the surrounding neighborhoods. 

Today, there is no evidence of Greensboro's recent snow and not much evidence of the once thriving Rolane Hosiery Mill and Factory Outlet Store on Howard & Hiatt.  The above building is approximately 140,000 square feet. It would be wonderful if nearby UNCG could find a use for this sturdy piece of Greensboro's mill history. For now, it seems pretty abandoned and neglected. H is for Hiatt Street and Heavy Load

Today, we see one HEAVY load on Hiatt Street. The truck is overloaded with brick landscaping chips. By the time we got back for this photo, it appeared that part of the load had already been emptied. Regardless, it is one heavy load, with the back bumper proped up to keep from overloading the shocks. Skies were sunny and people were out working on Hiatt Street on Sunday, the day before Greensboro got its March 2nd snowstorm.

Hiatt Street parallels Spring Garden Street and the railroad tracks. Some of  its houses are over 100 years old. Other dwellings, like the ones in the above photo, are newer. It is a neighborhood full of everything from student housing to small businesses. The old 10,000 square ft. Rolane Factory, almost 100 years old, is also located on Hiatt Street. We'll try to get back to photograph it.

Piedmont Triad International Airport

The above photo was taken at the Piedmont-Triad International Airport. Unfortunately, it was taken with a phone and so the quality is not the best. However, it does capture the energy found in most airports today with passengers walking with great determination. The above passenger did not realize that his strong profile turned the two dimensional advertising into a work of art. He is the quinessential 21st century traveler: Dressed in all-black clothing that won't show dirt; wearing comfortable shoes; carrying two bags of a size to fit in the overhead bin and under the seat in front of him. He was rushing along at a brisk, syncopated pace, totally unaware that posters advertising Merlefest, The North Carolina Zoo, and the International Civil Rights Center and Museum were a mere side-glance away. Wonder where the anonymous traveler is from and where he is going? Imagine High Point's John Coltrane playing jazz music as you take one last look at the photo. 

Philosophy 101

On the South Elm Street side of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard, the above building stands, adorned with a window full of sayings. We're not sure of the who, what, when, and why's of the building; just the where. However, obviously a lot of thought, time and effort has gone into the placement of the sayings. They don't appear to be religious; perhaps, just thoughts for living a good life. If you know any more about this building, please share. Otherwise, just enjoy the view. This would make a great backdrop for a photoshoot. If you do find yourself walking past this building, remember to "stand straight so no one can ride on your back" and ponder, "if you are the smartest in your group, you need another group." Do you agree?

Hmmmmm...... It is a new week, a new month, and soon to be a new season, on MLK, Jr. Blvd. and beyond!

 

Sunday Best

We usually publish something religious or spiritual on Sunday and were going to save this photo for Monday. However, it doesn't much more spiritual than seeing nature in all her glory.  It looks as if Mother Nature has put on her Sunday best. Seeing this beautiful sight yesterday, behind the Weatherspoon Museum, at the corner of Spring Garden and Tate Streets, made us bask in the glory of the day. We hope you find something worthy of reflection and prayer in your life today. And if you are nearby, stop by the Weatherspoon to see the great art in the museum. Then, step in the back parking lot and see the Divine beauty that has blessed Greensboro this week. Blossoms signify an awakening. Blossoms encourage us to rejoice. Blossoms on leaveless trees remind of the cycle of life and the inevitability of new beginnings. They are... well.... simply heavenly. May your Sunday be filled with warmth, love, spirituality, and blossoms.

People on the Street

Every 1st of the month is theme day for the City Daily Photo*  community and the March theme is "People on the street." Our person is an unknown man leaving New York Pizza at the corner of Tate Street and Walker Avenue. The pizzeria is 37 years young. A lot of people from Greensboro and elsewhere have walked through those doors. New York Pizza's by-the-slice option is a favorite of nearby students at Greensboro College and UNCG. The bright art on the brick changes frequently and really adds a lot of visual interest to the College Hill neighborhood.

The above colorful façade, with the nod to Pac-man, reminds us of the art of Jiha Moon: visiting Falk Artist at the Weatherspoon Art Muesum. Jiha Moon fuses pop culture images, like angry birds and the Nike swoosh, with traditional Korean motifs. If you are near Spring Garden and Tate Streets, we encourage you to stop in the Weatherspoon today. From 1-4pm, they are featuring WAM Family Day. There will be docents and activity facilitators available to show you around in English and in Spanish. Children are not only welcome, but encouraged to stop by. The Weatherspoon and the pizzeria are less than a block apart. We hope to see you at WAM Family Day and would love to join you for a slice of pizza! Whatever you do, enjoy your day!
