The above photo, taken last July, is a photo of Chris Padgett, founder of Fusion3 Design, and his 3-D printer. Padgett's start-up business is based on a 3-D printer that he designed while he was a mechanical engineering student at NC State University.* While nobody is exactly sure of the role 3-D printers will play in our lives, to be sure they are part of the fabric of the 21st century. Trent Capital Management, Inc, with a local office on North Elm Street, has invested heavily in this technology.
If you see Chris demonstrating his 3-D printer, make sure you take time to talk to him. He is quite adept at talking about scientific innovation in a way that non-scientists can understand. It is nice to know that Greensboro has a representation in this innovation. Imagine the possibilities, from plastic knick knacks to prosthetic limbs and everything in between. If given the option, how would you use 3-D printing?
