Independent Scuppernong Books has opened in downtown Greensboro at 304 South Elm Street. They perk up their little neck of the Gate City and bring a much-needed bookstore to the downtown area. As seen above, Scupernong is one long room of floor to (almost) ceiling books. It is named for North Carolina's state fruit the scuppernong grape. The store also has a children's section and a coffee and wine bar. So far, they are doing a good job of attracting readers of all ages.
The building is owned by Greensboro City Council member Nancy Hoffman who has plans for the other floors of the building. It will be interesting to see if the neighboring buildings become part of this block's renewal. In the meantime, we'll enjoy the 3,200-square-foot space featured above. As you are making a New Year's resolution, consider either reading more yourself or hooking someone else on books. Stores like Scuppernong are great because they aren't overly cluttered. They have just enough inventory to intice you to look and not so much that you are overwhelmed. Good luck, Brian and Greg!
