This past Thursday, Mt. Zion Baptist Church hosted a Health Faith Summit. The well attended event was free and open to the community. The summit was quite an education to attendees. First, it became patently clear that faith communities are playing a leadership role in seeing that their members have access to health care. Religious institutions to have nurses on site to check blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and monitor other vital signs. These on-site care providers not only help people have access to care, but also keep them out of emergency rooms. Anyone working in a health and life sciences field needs to know how to work with the faith communities. Summit attendees had the opportunity to learn how to build a support system to help maintain a healthy community. The keynote speaker for the event was Melissa Rogers, executive director of the White House Office of Faith-based and neighborhood partnerships.*
