Going through fall pictures, we found one from last year, taken on High Point Road. It shows the stark contrasts of the area. From the "CHEAP PRICES" tire advertisement to the majestic KOURY Convention Center high rise, High Point Road has something for everyone. The convention center is located near I-40 on land that Joe Koury purchased in anticipation of Greensboro's southwest expansion. Mr. Koury started this popular complex in the 1970's and the tower was added in the 1980's.
Koury, a Lebanese-American, is known as Greensboro's most prolific developer. Not only did he anticipate market demand, he helped create it. Were he alive today, he would be interested to see all of the construction going on around town. We're betting he would rent that billboard and put something related to his convention center in that spot.
Maybe we could convnce his relatives to rent that billboard and celebrate the family's name. The name 'Koury' means 'priest' in Arabic and is usually maintained as a family name for Christians, even if nobody is a priest in the subsequent generations. In the meantime, the Koury name is imortalized on top of the tower to the right. Happy Friday, dear readers. Consider going somewhere special this weekend, maybe even spending a night in the Koury convention center. However, we're not so sure about....... CHEAP PRICES!
