The Greensboro division of the Dow Corning company is located on 2914 Patterson Street, down from the Coliseum. Dow Corning is a global silicone supplier. The company is equally owned by the Dow Chemical Company and Corning, Incorporated. Dow Corning , headquartered in Midland, Michigan, was established in 1943, specifically to explore the potential of silicones.* Dow Corning's first product was silicone grease that made it possible for airplanes to fly at high altitudes. We're not sure what products are made in Greensboro, but the company is another example of the presence of the science and chemical industry in our community. With the public schools woking hard to prepare students for science, technology, engineering, and mathmatics (S.T.E.M.) careers, it seems like Dow Corning would be a good place for internships and field experience.
In addition to the business side of the company, Dow Corning funds the Edible Schoolyard educational programs at the Children's Museum. The Edible Schoolyard teaches children about food sources, cooking, the ecosystem, and sustainable living. How wonderful to have a corporation that is so committed to Greensboro's children. If you get a chance, stop by and see the edible schoolyard on North Church Street, across from the Central Branch of the Public Library. In the meantime, if you see someone from Dow Corning, thank them for funding the schoolyard!
I am almost sure that Silly Putty was made there for many years!
