Get Fit Guilford

Get Fit Guilford, a service learning event from the Youth Council, was held this past Saturday at the Ragsdale YMCA on High Point Road. Attendees learned about healthy living habits from community resources like Earth Fare, the YMCA, the Children's Museum (with its Edible Schoolyard), and the Vitamin Shoppe. The GCS students involved did a fabulous job of making this event a success. We took this photo of the events in the gym as the day was winding down. By the time we arrived, the majority of the crowd had filtered through and already participated in the informational events and demonstrations. 

Congratulations to everyone who helped make this event a reality and congratulations to everyone who made the effort to attend. Service learning is an opportunity for organizers to learn from participants and participants to learn from organizers. Everybody benefits in service learning events. Guilford County Schools has an easy-to-use way for students to find out about service learning opportunities and to document their involvement online. Let's hope Guilford County just got a little healthier and we can hereby conclude that we got fit, are getting fit, will get fit, and will have gotten fit....

House on Hobbs

This house, at the corner of Hobbs Road and Bearhollow, near Jefferson, shows North Carolina at its best. The homeowners are diligent about keep the yard nice. Now, their azaleas are in full bloom. The corner-appointed house is a welcoming entrance into the neighborhood. The azaleas make the mammoth hill (for Greensboro, at least) look like it was meant to be full of shrubs. Azaleas are a favorite ornamental plant in North Carolina.  Professional landscapers and hobbyists alike love the spring flowering plant. The combination of pink and white, as seen above, is especially popular.

This yard is not that far from the battlegrounds from the Revolutionary War and remind us that, when our forefathers were out defending our county and country, they were on hilly terrain in Greensboro. Greensboro's average altitude is only about 800-900 feet, but, as part of the Piedmont, it is just that... foot of the mountain. 

The United States has about 17 native azaleas, and on this website, you can learn not only their names but also their bloom times (here).  A big thank you for the people who keep their yards looking lovely. You give us all a good gift!

YWCA, Gone but not forgotten...

This photo, taken in downtown Greensboro, looks like it could have been taken 100 years ago. Actually, it was taken on Friday evening. It features the back of the original First Presbyterian Church, now the Greensboro Historical Museum. The lot in front, recently seeded with grass, is the site of the now-gone YWCA.  

The Young Women's Christian Association still has a facility in Greensboro, located on Spring Garden Street. The YWCA has quite a rich history in Greensboro, dating from 1903. Nationally, the organization got its start in New York City in 1858 (read history here). It is the oldest and largest women's organization in the United States.

As for the open field, left behind from the razing of the YWCA, we're not quite sure what is planned for the lot. While we wait to find out, Greensboro is taking advantage of the extra green space downtown. The lot is located between  Festival Park and the Greensboro Public Library. Vacant, the lot provides a stunning, old-timey view of a church is even older than the YWCA. It has been in Greensboro since 1824.  As we share our Sunday-day-of-reflection post, let's be thankful that the YWCA still has a local presence and that it continues to empower local women. Let's also be thankful that the First Presbyterian Church continues to thrive. They do their share of good deeds, too! Regardless of what you believe, happy Sunday. Take a Sunday drive and enjoy this view with your own eyes (in color).

Follow the Turquoise and Orange Road

February 1st Place, a crossover street of Elm Street and stretching from Greene to Davie Streets, just got painted. This little section of street in downtown Greensboro is now a pop up promenade beside the International Civil Rights Museum. This will be a place for people to gather, enjoy food from food trucks and hang out from 6-11 pm on Friday and Saturday nights. The promenade was painted turquoise and orange, representing the seat colors of lunch counter chairs at Woolworth, where the sit-ins were held. Those iconic colors of the 1960's were also the colors of Howard Johnson Restaurants. Turquoise and orange are so old, they're trending again and just perfect for this outdoor gathering space.

What a great idea! We predict that this street will hold special events long after June. For now, follow happenings at Pop Up Promenade's Facebook page! Let's hope it remains a fun, safe place to bring the community together.  Downtown, at dusk, never looked better!

West Market Street

Here is a classic view of Greensboro, the West Market Street United Methodist Church and the Lincoln Financial/Jefferson-Pilot/Jefferson-Standard building. The view was taken from a truck parked on the South side of West Market Street, facing east. As we traverse the streets this weekend, ever pursuing  future posts, we reflect on the past week. The Great Escape food truck that we featured  this week was voted best food truck of 2013 in Yes! Weekly. The Weatherspoon Art Museum was voted best museum. We were just there on Thursday  There is so much goodto do  in Greensboro.

For sure, we'll be heading to Oak Ridge for Leanne Pizio's "Keep it Local Event." We'll also head to the Children's Museum for the incrEDIBLE plant sale. By the way, the Great Escape Food Truck will be there. As we all enjoy activities in Greensboro, let's hope those fluffy white clouds remain high in the sky for all to enjoy. Baseball Town

For not having a professional baseball team, Greensboro has some great baseball viewing opportunities. In the above photo, we see a game in progress at UNCG's baseball stadium. They were playing Appalachian State on April 13th and UNCG won 6-5 after 11 innings. Needless to say, it was a nail biting game.

Just about two miles east, Greensboro has the Grasshoppers and a few miles east of that, NCA&T's team.  For the universities to the pre-collegiate crowd, Greensboro has some great baseball opportunities. From Summerfield to Pleasant Garden, to AAU to the Parks and Rec teams, there is baseball for just about everyone at all levels.

If you haven't been to a game in a while, look up the schedule of your favorite local team and head out for a little nostalgia, Americana, and a great evening of sports. The Grasshoppers are home from tonight through Tuesday and Friday night is fireworks night!

O is for Organic

The above photo features the organic produce section at Whole Foods in Friendly Shopping Center. With three supermarket-sized natural food stores in Greensboro, as well as numerous farmers' markets,  organic food is getting easier and easier to find. From Ashevilly to Kitty Hawk, here is an organic food store finder Google "ap" for North Carolina. Organic foods do not contain synthetic inputs, nor do they have pesticides. The organic, Green Food Revolution took hold in the 1940's and has been growing ever since. While there is controversy about whether organic food is better for you than commercially grown, conventional food, there is something wholesome about knowing your food hasn't been genetically modified or sprayed with chemicals. Let us remember, until the 20th century, the majority of farming was organic. Organic is the ORIGINAL, old-timey way to grow food.*

Today is ABC Wednesday and for this round, we're featuring A-Z GO GREEN Greensboro and "O" is for original, ordinary, and ORGANIC, the way grandma, and nature intended food to be. Yes, we know there are two sides to this story. AND, Greensboro has several businesses that rely on chemicals and chemical processes. Maybe for the next round of ABC Wednesday, we'll feature science of Greensboro. In the meantime, we're off to plant some organic chard in the yard! Happy ABC Wednesday!

The (Yummy) Great Escape

The GREAT ESCAPE food truck visited the Pottery Festival at the Yanceyville Farmers Curb Market this past weekend. Vendors and shoppers alike were able to enjoy gourmet noodles and crepes. This food truck is owned by three young entrepreneurs in Greensboro: Jon Bohlen, Sam Shumaker, and Dallas Baker. The three chefs have joined forces under one mobile roof! From the above link, you can follow Great Escape's calendar of where they will set up each day.

Greensboro is seeing the food truck industry grow and grow. Greensboro has many young adults (20's-30's) starting their own businesses-- like the owners of GREAT ESCAPE.  Whether the businness are online, small booths in larger facilities, or mobile like the above, the trend seems to be away from the burdensome overhead of brick and mortar.  For those who want a business: Dream big, start small, and who knows where your idea will take you..... In the meantime, see you in line at a food truck. Follow the sounds of the vehicles that sound like they are still running. Follow the aroma of great food!

Kirkwood Clay

Husband and wife potters Scott and Tiffany Hansman started Kirkwood Pottery together. They made their retail debut at the Yanceyville Farmers Curb Market yesterday at the annual pottery festivel. Kirkwood Pottery is made on a wheel and is sturdy, well-balanced, and ready to use. With their wide array of colors, Scott and Tiffany have made something to match every kitchen. They spend a great deal of time on the ergonomics of their pieces- especially perfecting handles -- and so the pieces are easy to use. In addition to vessels, they make clay earrings. Prices are extremely reasonable.  

Scott teaches English and Tiffany manages a wellness program. Likely, Scott can tell you about pottery across the centuries and everything that has ever been written about it and Tiffany can tell you what kind of nutritious meals to consume on the pottery plates. Let's hope that this is a profitable hobby that will continue to nurture their relationship for a long time. Congratulations on a great day at the pottery festival.

 

Friendly Avenue Baptist Church

Churches look so different at night. Above, we see a photo of Friendly Avenue Baptist Church on West Friendly Avenue at Hamilton Lakes. Here is the same scene by day. Friendly Avenue Baptist Church got its start in 1899 with seven people meeting in a store on South Elm Street. Today, after many moved, the church is in its current location and it has grow into a large and active congregation. We try to feature something spiritual every Sunday (see here).  Some Sundays, we talk a lot about the church we feature. After crazy weeks like this one with the situation in Boston, you just want to keep it simple:

A Few Minutes of Solitude

In this hectic world, we seek moments to relax as the opportunities present themselves. In the above photo a man sits, reading at McDonald's Restaurant near Kohl's on Battleground. Azaleas have bloomed and crepe myrtles are coming back to life. The man appears to be seeking a little bit of peace and quiet before resuming his hectic schedule. The scene is Norman Rockwell-esque.

One great aspect of photography is that you can capture little slices of life that look so beautiful within the frame.  Yet on location, you hear the whirring of traffic on Westridge and Battleground Avenue. You see the clutter of cars parked in the lot and watch consumers dashing to spend their Kohl's bucks or heading to Village Tavern for lunch. For a brief moment, we enjoy the inviting image of a man, sitting alone with a giant McDrink, enjoying his  little slice of solitude.

After yesterday's stressful events in Boston, we could all benefit from a taking a few moments to relax and breathe in the beauty around us.

Time to Travel

Above, we share a photo of a woman who is sitting in Barnes & Noble Bookseller at Friendly Shopping Center. Likely, she is planning out a summer vacation or road trip. The woman seemed so interested in charting her route on the map. Sad will be the day is these brick and mortar bookstores exist no more. We can't imagine anything more intriguing than sitting in a bookstore, currounded by printed material.... dreaming... especially if there is a cup of coffee nearby.

We hope that the weather is nice this weekend and that you are planning something great to do- especially if it involves a good map and bookseller! In this era of mapquest and GPS, it is nice to know that there is at least one old-school, map reader among us! Happy Friday, dear readers.

 

 

New Highway 220

Above, you see a photo of the widening of Highway 220 (North Battleground) at Lake Higgins, between Greensboro and Summerfield- near Strawberry Road. This is how you turn a little rural road into a highway-- one load of gravel at a time. The process is fascinating. First you cordon off the lake to protect the water supply; then you clear the land; next, you fill and grade, fill and grade. An engineer would be a lot more articulate about the process. Our explanation is the perspective of the curious bystander. Before you know it, this road will be a four-lane, limited access highway. Well, on a totally unrelated note, today is national carry-a-poem-in-your-pocket day. So grab a copy of your favorite poem, carry it in your pocket and read it to everyone from friends to innocent bystanders (a grocery store line would be great).  Ideally, roads and bridges connect people. May your poem connect you to others in a positive way!

N is for Nature, Nurture, Natural

This past Sunday, the Yanceyville Farmers Curb Market hosted its first plant sale and earth day celebration. Unfortunately, many booths were unfilled and the normal rush of customers were not there. Perhaps attendance was low because it was the day before tax day; perhaps because people are not yet familiar with the event; perhaps because the giant arts and crafts festival was taking place at the coliseum complex; just maybe the event could have benefitted from more advertising. At any rate, we hope that the event continues becaue the plants offered were great and seemed to be a good money value. Plus, vendors were very knowledgeable. One farmer and his wife took the time to explain three different kinds of thyme to us.

We're using the above photo of the event to help with this week's ABC Wednesday post. Today is "N" day for "N" is for nature, nurture, natural. Natural produce helps keep us and the earth healthy and nature is our most important resourse. We must nurture it. From insects to trees and everything in-between, nature keeps us healthy. "N" is the second most commonly used consonant in the English alphabet; second only to "T".  We hope you are doing somethi-N to make today special. We hope the plant/earth day event will happen again next year. In the meantime, if you still need plants, consider the Herb Society's event at the Greek Orthodox Church this Thursday. 31st International Festival at UNCG

Sunday's 31st International Festival, held on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, was such a community-building event. Over thirty-four countries had representations and cultural booths. It was possible to sample food from around the world, practice language skills, learn about cultures and interact in a safe and friendly atmosphere. For a few brief hours, we were a global village. International students could wear the clothing of their families and celebrate their respective ethnicities, as opposed to masking them.

The above group of dancers was comprised of young children. The tall white building in the background, just behind the leafing trees,  is part of Jackson Library. How symbolic that these young girls were facing the University's tower of knowledge, perhaps anticipating their academic futures as they danced for the rows and rows of onlookers. 

 

Biscuitville Bowl 2013 a Blast

A HUGE thank you to all of the sponsors of the 2013 Greensboro Collegiate Biscuitville Bowl. The event is billed as, "a week-long celebration of Greensboro, North Carolina's thriving entrepreneurial community, its seven colleges and universities, and its 50,000 college students. Biscuitville, a locally-grown and scratch-made business is the title sponsor."  Good clean fun was had by all, especially Greensboro's seven higher education institutions: Bennett College, Elon University School of Law, Greensboro College, Guilford College, Guilford Technical Community College, North Carolina A & T State University, and The University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Above, you see the Syngenta obstacle in front of the Cultural Arts Center and on the southern edge of Center City Park. As runners finished the other obstacles and the 5K race, they were sprayed with water, just before being hit with a blast of biscuit flour. What a great way to de-stress before gearing up for the end of the semester. The only thing that could possibly make the event better would be if Biscuitville could convince Garrison Keillor to MC and sing his Powdermilk Biscuit song from Prairie Home Companion ( http://youtu.be/RHz91b74QbY  ). To the right, greeted by Syngenta employees and their green balloons, an unidentified co-ed emerges from the biscuit flour and sails across the finish line.

Eller Memorial Baptist

This is a photo of Eller Memorial Baptist Church, located at the corner of Fourth and Walnut Streets (between Summit and Yanceyville)  in Greensboro.  It is a classic white-steepled, brick church. The church doesn't have much of a presence on the Internet. However, it does have a great presence in East Greensboro in the part of town that was once dominated by the textill mill communities.

Previously, we featured a low, mod-brick  buliding that belongs to the church. Here is a link to an article about the Eller family and their association with North Carolina starting back in the 1800's

Spring Has Sprung

There seems to be a real disconnect when Passover and Easter are early and flowers and blossoms are late. Finally, dogwoods are opening and sharing their beauty in Greensboro. Once the dogwoods bloom, we can say SPRING HAS SPRUNG! Our state flower is back in all of its glory. It has only been our state flower since 1941. Before that, the daisy and goldenrod were  often considered the state flower.

If you are out on this glorious day today, UNCG is having its 31st annual International Festival, so you can celebrate the great diversity of Greensboro, especially in the University community. Also, be prepared for traffic changes downtown as the city hosts the Biscuitville events. There is so much to do this weekend. However, don't forget to take time to stop and admire those dogwood blossoms. They'll be here and gone before you can say, "State flower."

HPU and Biscuitville Collegiate Bowl

Well, it is the weekend and a lot of people in Greensboro will be on the go, especially if it is nice weather. The Biscuitville Collegiate Bowl will be in full swing. The event is a way to bring together all of the local institutions of higher education (IHE). Students will dive into sweet tea and slosh through pools of jelly and feel as if they are romping inside a buttermilk biscuit. Greensboro is a logical place for the event because Biscuitville is headquartered here. Plus, we have so many different IHE's.

While at the airport, earlier this week, we noticed that in the parking reserved for airport board members was this HPU-mobile. We're about convinced that this Mercedes is owned by High Point University's president, Dr. Nido Qubein. Perhaps he was at the airport attending to something for the Biscuitville Bowl. Probably not. Likely, the above person was attending an important meeting related to the Piedmont Triad International Airport. As for the Biscuitville Bowl. All day today, they're still taking individual entries down at the Green Bean. Hope to see you up to your neck in biscuit dough. Hoping to see you working hard on a college campus. Hoping to see you... period. And Mr. Qubein, too!

The Zinc Kings

Banjo + Bass + Fiddle + Mandolin = String Band!  The Zink Kings are an old-time music band that plays around Greensboro at places that appreciate acoustic music- like Tate Street Coffee House. This past weekend, the Zink Kings performed at Earthfare Organic and Whole Foods Super Market on Battleground Avenue. They provided the entertainment during the supermarket's 'Burgers for Bucks' event. 

As the weather warms up and the days get longer, we will start to see more and more outdoor music events in Greensboro. And, the best part is that many of them are free. So, keep a lawn chair and your dancing shoes in your trunk. You never know when you will stumble upon one of these great events.

M is for Mulch

          Marshall Stone is a landscape business on Sandy Ridge Road, near the Farmers Market in Greensboro. They specialize in stone installations and outdoor living areas; however, they also have plenty of mulch. From what we can surmise online, the company is about seven years old and their primary markets are Virginia and North Carolina. The above Sandy Ridge location is fairly new. It has an attractive stone and water feature in the front of the business; however, today we are interested in their mulch piles.

         As you prepare your yards and gardens for the summer, remember, mulch is a fabulous addition to your landscape. Mulch keeps out weeds (which compete for nutrients) and it helps retain moisture in soil.  A good layer of mulch also optimizes root temperature-- cooler in summer and   warmer in winter.*  We are lucky in Greensboro. If you leave yard waste by the curb, the city hauls it away and converts it to mulch that can eventually be purchased. The Ingleside Facility in High Point accepts yard waste from private residences for free. Today is ABC Wednesday, and for this round of GO GREEN GREENSBORO, M is for mulch because it is a fabulous, recycled, organic material.

Early April at the Piedmont Triad Farmers Market

The Piedmont Triad Farmers Market on Sandy Ridge Road is starting to come alive again. Farmers are out with plants, trees, and some food items. With the Easter egg hunt behind them, the next big event is the Herb Festival on Saturday, April 20th from 8:00 am- 5:00 pm. Greenshouse Vegetable Day will be on Friday, April 26th from 1:00 am-1:00 pm. That event is sponsored by the N.C. Department of Agriculture and comes with a free tomato sandwich. The Piedmont Triad Farmers Market is one of five that is overseen by the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture. Steve Troxler is Commissioner of Agriculture. The mission statement for the organization is: (t)o provide services that promote and improve agriculture, agribusiness and forests; protect consumers and businesses; and conserve farmland and natural resources for the prosperity of all North Carolinians (reference). 

We heard a food segment on NPR the other day and they said that the closer children are to fresh fruits and vegetables (like tomatoes), the more likely they are to eat them; with the "closest" being to actually grow the food and to eat what is harvested. Parents were overheard teaching their young children this past Sunday, allowing them to have some choice in the plants purchased and another family allowing children to pick produce. The farmers market is such an educational place to spend an afternoon. Remember to consider planting as many edibles as possible. We already purchased our chard so that we can continue our tradition of chard in the yard and so fun to eat from the flower bed. Try it, Greensboro!

This Old Car

Sunday afternoon, we pulled off the road when spotting this car at the Antique Marketplace, out near the airport. The car was really attractive and refurbished to look spotless inside and out. Unfortunately, we are not car experts and it didn't have anything to indicate make, year, or model. We included a photo of the instrument panel and slender steering wheel (see below) as we're counting on our readers to identify it. Imagine how fun it would be to take this car for a Sunday drive on a warm, spring afternoon. This old car gets around at we spotted it a little later on Wendover Avenue, when we were en route to a big box store.

 The business across the street is Varco Pruden, builders on non-residential low-rise buildings. The glass in the VP building matches the car perfectly and the trees, blooming back to life, are icing on the cake.

 

Church, Not Just on Sunday

In the above photo, we see a youth group at Daystar Church on Westover Terrace playing a good game of cornhole. Two wooden, angled planks are set across from each other. They have holes on the surace and teams toss bean bags hoping to score points. The Daystar youth group was playing the more wholesome version without alcohol last Wednesday afternoon. In Greensboro, as well as throughout the South, Wednesday youth-group time is extremely popular. Many people go to church, not just on Sunday and have great memories from their church youth group time. Wednesday youth group and Bible study are times to nuture the soul and spirit.

Daystar Church, located across from Grimsley High School, is the old Westover Church which has grown to a megachurch on Muirs Chapel Road with a very interesting history (read here). Likely, Daystar is hoping to make an equally memorable history.

Run, Greensboro, Run!

Competitive track and field events have been around since B.C. and are a natural form of human expression. From needing to get from Point A to Point B to seeing who can get there fastest, running takes on so many facets. The above photo was taken a few weeks ago at a high school event held at Elon University. Elon is located about 20 miles east of Greensboro; however, they have a law school in downtown Greensboro. The track event at Elon's main campus featured high school teams throughout the state. The above photo features young men running the four by four relay race. How exciting is that point when the baton transfers from person to person. If you look closely in lane 3, you will notice the Grimsley High School Whirles hard at work.

Happy Saturday, dear readers, and we hope that you do what you can to support high school athletics. Sports keeps students happy, healthy, and focused. The determination in the faces of the young men in the above photo is nothing short of inspiring. How about a round of applause for all the teams.... everywhere. Otter Woodworks

Today's ride takes us to Browns Summit, just northeast of Greensboro (still in Guilford County). The colonial-red, wooden building has great provenance as it was formerly Browns Summit Broom Works, owned by the Reverend Fred Jones until 2001.* Likely, this simple rectangular building, located at 4601 E. Highway 150,  was something else long before it was a broom works.

At present, the building is the home of Otter Woodworks. The woodworkers bill themselves as designers and builders of handcrafted heirloom furniture, cabinets, and high end millwork. From looking at their Facebook page, Otter Woodworks seems to do fabulous work. Buildings like this one add so much character to our landscape. How wonderful that it is being maintained.

It's Blossomtime in Greensboro

Slowly and surely, it is blossomtime in Greensboro. Pear and cherry trees are blooming and already past peak in most parts of the county. Dogwood will be blooming soon. The above photo was taken in the courtyard of the McIver Building on the UNCG campus. McIver Building formerly housed the language departments and this scene reminds us of an impressionist painting. It isn't every day one finds lavender garden chairs to photograph.

The only thing that would have pleased us more in this scene would have been for a young couple to have been sitting there sipping espresso or green tea. It is a vignette in search of characters. With the language programs relocated to the Moore Humanities Building, and Tate Street the main hangout for coffee breaks with friends and colleagues, it is likely the bistro table and chairs will remain hauntingly vacant. 

The early blossoms are already starting to show signs of being replaced by leaves. Do not delay; head out and find a nice place to sit and take in the confetti of petals while they are here for their brief visit.

L is for Light, Landfills, and Learning

Today, we bring you a Big Belly smart/solar trash can.*  The one photographed above is located on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in front of the student union. The can on the right, that opens like a mailbox, is the solar operated one. It compacts trash and sends an e-mail alerting the cleaning crew that it needs to be emptied. While the compactors cost about $5,000 per can, they can pay for themselves in labor costs saved by not having to be "checked" by humans. 

It is so wonderful that these cans are located on a university campus. Universities are a place to foment ideas. If we are going to transform education and prepare students to generate new ideas and products to enhance our quality of life, we have to surround them with innovation. Gone are the days when we teach for the future. Today’s expectations are that classrooms impact the present. It takes a blend of good teaching, student motivation, state of the art materials, and authentic, real-world projects to grow these great idea like the Big Belly solar trash compactor.

L is for life;  living- with minimal environmental impact; lawns- and conserving water;  leaves- that Greensboro collects for mulch;  and land and landfills. Also, L is for LIGHT to compact trash and make it take up LESS space in the LANDFILLS. Finally, L is for the LEARNING that has to take place to make these innovative devices possible.

7241 Burlington Road

Today, we are a few miles east of Greensboro, at 7241 Burlington Road, also known as Highway 70 and Wendover Avenue. The historic home is converted into the offices of Harris, Crouch, Long, Scott & Miller, Inc., who bill themselves as wealth preservationists. The lovely brick home, with the large front porch and sprawling yard evokes memories of the early 1800's when people were just starting to call Greensboro, and the surrounding area, home.

According to their website, the firm was started in 1967, but grew into all of its names by 1981. It is so wonderful to see these old homes being repurposed as businesses, as opposed to being torn down. We think we could spend several days on the above estate, especially at this time of year when spring presents a new gift daily.

Biltmore Hotel Sprucing up for Spring

Greensboro's Biltmore Hotel at 111 West Washington Street, just off of Elm St., looks like it is getting spruced up for spring; painting and a cleaning- at least the façade.  The Biltmore looks pretty good, especially in light of the fact that the building was constructed in 1895.

It wasn't the only thing getting cleaned/repaired last Friday. From Burlington to High Point, businesses were having work done on their roofs, painting trim, and washing windows. After all, it is time for spring cleaning. Now that the days are getting longer, you ought to consider putting First Friday on your agenda this week. Wonder if the Biltmore would let us have a peek inside. We're curious as to how much old world charm remains in the hotel.
