Greensboro's newest indy coffee shop, GEEKSBORO, is located in Irving Park, near William Mangum's gallery and Elizabeth's Pizza. Since Acme Comics is nearby, it is not uncommon to see people in Geeksboro swapping out their comic books. Also seen are people playing "old school" video games and participating in fantasy, role playing games. Last time we were there, we sat next to a man, with his box of categorized cards, who was explaining every detail of villans, players, powers, and battlegrounds to a new player. Geeksboro is like that.... you can see experts interacting with experts and experts mentoring novice players in wargaming and fantasy settings while carrying on conversations about very specific aspects of science that not everyone can understand. It is as if the geekiness and intellect of the sitcom Big Bang Theory has come to life. Perhaps our favorite aspect of Geeksboro is the movie theatre in the basement where indy movies and documentaries are shown. They even show the CBS Sunday Morning Show with Charles Osgood.
Owner Joe Scott works really hard to help everyone feel welcome, regardless of general interests and level of geekiness. He said that even in his dorm room, during his college days, he would attract people interested in comics, fantasy sci-fi, card and board games. Often, people he had never seen before would come. He wants to maintain that inviting atmosphere in Geeksboro. The shop is much like a TARDIS-- bigger on the inside that it appears from the outside. One of the best ways to keep up with the coffee house is to follow them on Facebook. One of the best ways to experience it is to put on your nicest Pac-Man shirt and head on down for a cup of fresh coffee.
We just read in the News & Record this morning that The Comic Book City Convention will be held at nearby Acme Comics this fall (October 26th and 27th.
It is great that our city got selected for this event. Geeksboro will have the coffee ready for the overflow crowd, Let's hope they buy a few extra bottles of indie soft drinks!
