Wednesday's pre-dawn moon was almost a full moon. The actual full moon rose on Wednesday evening. It is known as the known as the Full Frost Moon as, by this time of year, there has been a hard frost. Alternatively, November's full moon is called the Full Beaver Moon, stemming from when traps were set for beavers who are busily preparing for winter. Traps are set before swamps freeze. Such is the lore of the North Carolina mountains. Here in Greensboro, we don't do as much bever pelt gathering. In the middle of the last century, beavers were rare in North Caroina. Restocking efforts took place through the 1950's and now, quantity has increase, range has expanded, and beavers are not rare. Beaver trapping is open, statewide, from November 1st- March 31st.
The last time we shared a moon shot on Greensboro Daily Photo, Mr. Preston Earle posted a comment with us about how to get good moon shots. He was an engineer, which is evident in his comment. Mr. Earle departed earth on January 2nd, 2012 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Local journalist Ed Cone said it best: "Preston Earle had the rare ability to disagree without being disagreeable" (Cone). What a legacy..... to be able to disagree without being disagreeable. The world could use a little more of that trait. Let's dedicate today's moon shot to Mr. Earle, a man who shared a love of Greensboro as well as taking the- ever elusive- perfect moon photo.
* a great article here.
