Since the community swim season concluded with this past weekend's trans-city meet, Greensboro's dedicated swim families can finally dive into their summer vacations. Lindley Pool at Lindley Park has hosted the Community Swim Association's event since 1959. The park and pool are named for John Van Lindley who donated the 40 acres for the park in 1917.* Lindley (1838- 1918), a local Quaker landowner, was very involved in developing Greensboro neighborhoods and recreation areas around the turn of the 20th century.
In the above photo, we see one of the Friendly Frog coaches, Coach Ed, positioned behind young swimmers at the finals on Saturday. His pink hair is left over from the wildly fun parade of swim teams earlier that afternoon. Little did Coach Ed and his colleagues know at that point in the afternoon, Friendly would go on to win the event, reclaiming the title from The Greensboro Country Club. If you follow swimming in Greensboro, you will be interested in seeing the list of winning teams across the decades (here).
After 52 great years at Lindley Pool, Greensboro's City Meet will move inside to the Greensboro Aquatic Center at the Coliseum Complex. Friendly Swim Team has the great distinction of winning the first and last meet held at Lindley. Stop back next year to see which team will win the FIRST meet at the aquatic center!
