Today's photo takes us to the corner of West Northwood Street and Huntington Road. (This photo was actually taken at the edge of Edward McCay's parking lot). Here we see the early stages of construction of First Citizens Bank in Irving Park. First Citizens Bank was established in 1898. The four-story, 30,900 square-foot office of the Raleigh-based bank is under construction behind Anton's Restaurant. In addition to administrative offices, it will be a full-service bank. Being over 100 years old, one would like to think that they have a clear cut recipe for success that will carry them into the twenty-second century.
The building will change the landscape of the southern end of Irving Park. It just may be the tallest building in Irving Park. Let's hope they are making an effort to be environmentally responsible and that they will feature local art. Greensboro artist William Mangum is just down the street and Irving Park Elementary School has a mighty fine art program (hint, hint).
Can you find the two American flags billowing in the breeze? By the way, readership has been up this week. Thank you to our new readers as well as our longtime readers. Readers, like YOU, make this mom and pop volunteer-effort all worthwhile. Please spread the word that we're here.
