By the Shores of Lake Euphemia

Yeserday, we featured the Morton House in Hamilton Lakes. If you stand in their back yard and look southeast across Lake Euphemia, you will be looking at this structure. It is located in the common area of Hamilton Lakes where residents stroll and interact. From above, the rock and mortar structure has the appearance of an amphitheater.  Surely, little children are convinced that trolls and fairies live in the grotto and, it must be an amazing place for teenagers to socialize. We'd love to know who built the stone structure AND who named the lake after the Great Martyr Euphemia (read about her here).

If you are local, you might be interested in knowing that "Hamilton Lakes is a large  neighborhood park with over 60 acres of recreational opportunities. The natural wooded area is filled with trails, and has a stream and a playground on the northern end of the park" (GSO Parks & Rec). Bird watchers love this area year-round as it is reputed to have a wide variety of birds from Eastern Screech Owls to Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers. According to Denise Burnette of the Carolina Bird Club, spring is a great time to view neo-tropical migratory birds at Hamilton Lakes. K is for Kemp Road

Today is ABC Wednesday and "K" is for Kemp Road. Located in Hamilton Lakes and flanking Lake Euphemia, Kemp Road is really two roads: Kemp Road East and Kemp Road West, with 55 and 71 homes respectively. The property above, located at 302 Kemp Road West, backs up to Lake Euphemia. Today's featured property was built in the 1920's for Joseph Reece Morton, founder of Morton Chemical Company. Through several acquisitions, including one by Pfizer in 1957, Morton Chemical Company today is Greensboro's  Morflex, Inc.

The Morton house, one of the early homes in Hamilton Lakes, blends Tudor Revival and French Eclectic styles (Fripp, Greensboro Neighborhoods, Volume II, 1998, p. 109). In recent years, and under new ownership, the house has been made significantly larger. When first built, Mrs. Morton developed elaborate, formal gardens on site. Even with the expansion of the house, the landscaping remains lovely. Below, see another view and more details of the roofline. Una Quinceañera at Bicentennial Gardens

Turning fifteen is a major life celebration for young ladies in much of the Spanish-speaking world. Greensboro's latina population is no different. Making the quinceañera memorable is big business: Photographers, new dresses, dance hall rentals, live music, food, gifts, flowers, and a BIG fancy cake. Families do everything within their financial means to make a daughter's transition from childhood to adulthood memorable. Quinceañera celebrations are a cross between a Sweet 16 party, a bat mitzvah, and a wedding; with special emphasis on family. Here is the traditional format for the event: the young lady turning fifteen enters with her father while slow songs are playing, they have flowers, and they usually enter through a decorated arch. First, she dances a waltz with dad. There is the first period of dancing, the main course meal, the second period of dancing, the dessert with a video playback of the birthday with friends, a 15-candle ceremony where a candle is given to 15 people who have been influential in the young lady's life, the third period of dancing, a toast and cake cutting, and a carnival-style dance ( Wiki). Traditionally, this event is the first time that the young lady wears makeup, nail polish, and high heels.

For her quinceañera, the young woman in the purple dress above is on a photo shoot in The Tanger Family Bicentennial Gardens at 1105 Hobbs Road. This public garden was established in Greensboro in 1976 to celebrate America's bicentennial. There is so much natural beauty here and nature is augmented with a man-made touches like a stream with water that recirculates, a wedding gazebo, a wooded nature trail, well-maintained gardens, sculptures and stone walls. Bicentennial Gardens is a stunning backdrop for any life event, including quinceañeras.

Sea Gulls in ROW 8

Move over Alfred Hitchcock and The Birds. Attention Wal-Mart shoppers: Gulls are flocking to Greensboro. Last week, we spotted several hanging out in ROW 8 of the Wal-Mart parking lot near Cone Boulevard. While gulls are usually associated with the ocean, hence the name 'sea' gulls, it is not uncommon to find some species of gulls inland. Since they are scavengers, gulls are found in places where food is readily available-- like parking lots of fast food restaurants. Gulls seem to love French fries, even though they are as bad for birds as they are for humans! (Read more about gulls here). 

Certain times of the year gulls stop by other places in Greensboro such as the the Warnersville Recreation Center and Jones Elementary School. Once we heard a Kindergartener ask his parent, "Does this mean that Greensboro used to be by the ocean?"  Perhaps the gulls in ROW 8 are en route to somewhere for the summer. The gulls make us think that North Carolinians must have a little seagull in our blood: we love to flock to the beach! Morehead United Methodist Church

Morehead United Methodist Church is located next to the Spears Y on Horse Pen Creek Road. The cross with the purple cloth draped over it reminds people passing by that Christians are in the middle of celebrating Lent. Purple is the liturgical color for Lent-- which is the forty days before Easter, also known as 'quadragesima' in Latin. Lent is a time of fasting, sacrificing, and spiritual renewal.

While a church history is not available on their website, we're betting that Morehead United Methodist is named for North Carolina's 29th governor, John Motley Morehead (1796-1866) who studied at Caldwell Institute in Greensboro. As seen in the photo today, Morehead United Methodist usually has thought provoking messages on their marquee. Additionally, they serve hot dogs every Saturday as a way to earn a little revenue and to share food and fellowship with the local community. Vigilant Min-Pin; Loyal Companion

Arf! Arf!

Last weekend, man's best friend vigilantly awaited the return of his owner at the Yanceyville Farmers' Market. This miniature pincher's eyes were glued to the exact door where his owner entered the market. Dogs are so smart and loyal that not even our photography was enough to distract him. If you are in the market for a loyal pet, the Guilford County Animal Shelter has several waiting for you (their new website is fabulous).  The Guilford County Animal Shelter has everything from guinea pigs and rabbits to dogs and kittens who are hoping for a second chance. The GCAS website has three pages of dogs and eight pages of cats. All have the potential to be loyal companions. What a great thing to do on a Saturday; head out to your local animal shelter and adopt a pet. If you adopt from GCAS and are a frequent reader of GDP, send us a photo with your new friend and we'll try to post it. If you are not in the position to adopt, consider volunteering or sending a financial contribution. 

The cool weather last weekend made it safe to leave this canine locked in the car. However, soon, in North Carolina, it will be way TOO HOT to leave a pet (or child!!!!!) in a car-- even with the window cracked. The Sky is the Limit

When life puts up hurdles, jump! This photo was taken at a the Phoenix Invitational Track and Field Meet at Elon University last Saturday. Many high school students throughout the Piedmont Region-- including several students from Guilford County-- participated in the meet. The warm, breezy, spring weather was perfect for spending the day outside running, jumping, throwing, and shot putting. The Elon staff and students involved with this event went out of their way to make sure it ran smoothly. Elon University is about 15 miles east of Greensboro; however, its connections to Greensboro are many. Elon  has a law school in downtown Greensboro and many people who work at Elon live in Greensboro. 

On another note, in these financially difficult times, please remember that school sports programs contribute significantly to the wellness of our children. Also, practice and meets give teenagers something to do and people to socialize with in a positive, healthy environment. Let's help keep these programs intact. Like the young man at the hurdle, we are ready to JUMP into the weekend and hope you are too. Happy Skywatch Friday.

Hand to Hand Market

This past weekend, the Hand to Hand Market was held at the Green Bean Coffee House on Elm Street. Hand to Hand was an indoor version of the First-Friday Indie Market (held in the parking lot at the corner of MLK Drive and S. Elm Street). Saturday's event filled the whole building. This photo was taken upstairs where vendors sold handicrafts, jewelry, and art work. A wellness thread permeated the event; for example Zen Cat was on site to educate people about eating gluten-free and Deep Roots Co-op provided background information about the co-op and updated the audience on the progress of their new facility. Hands on demonstrations were offered throughout the day. When we were there, a table was set up to fold cranes to send to Japan to uplift the spirits of the disaster survivors.

Greensboro makes a real effort to provide venues for local artists to sell and for organizations to promote their causes. The whole day was another fine example of a Greensboro business serving as a community resource. Thank you, Green Bean; may you host more events like this one. As for the word ART on the wall, perhaps it is an acronym, A.R.T., Another Remarkable Time in GREENSBORO! "J" is for Jessup Grove Road

Today is ABC Wednesday and "J" is for Jessup Grove Road. The above farm, at the corner of Jessup Grove and Lewiston Roads, is how much of Guilford County looked in earlier years. It is one of 52 homes on Jessup Grove. According to the NCSU & A&T SU Cooperative Extension Service, Guilford County has the largest horse population in North Carolina. Horses account for 4.6 million dollars of income for our county-- over half of the livestock revenue. These horses on Jessup Grove live the new-rural lifestyle, meaning that they are beside several housing developments. On warm afternoons couples can be seen jogging or pushing strollers and walking their dogs past this farm. 

We featured Jessup Grove Road today because "Jessup" is a well-known name in Greensboro. Jessup Service  is a heating, air conditioning, plumbing, and refrigeration service that has been in business in Greensboro since 1950. The biggest surprise to us is that in 2001, Jessup Service Inc. was sold to Suzanne Brown. And so, a woman is behind the Jessup Service name on the softball and baseball jerseys that we will likely see again this season!

In researching the "J" streets in Greensboro, we quickly learned that there are 57 "J" streets and they are all over the map. Most locals have heard of Joyner St. near UNCG and Jefferson Road that connects Friendly Avenue to New Garden Road. However, did you know there is a J Street, a JJ Drive, a Jane Street, a Jans Court and a Justamere Farm Road? Of all the "J" streets, Julian, south of Lee Street and near Bennett College, has the most houses: 129. Stop back next week to see what "K" will bring. St. Patrick's Charity Classic

This past Saturday, the Rothar Tugas St. Patrick's Cycling Classic charity bike ride departed from cycles de ORO (1410 Mill Street) at 10:00 am. Proceeds were donated to the Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro. Novice, intermediate, and expert rides were available at 29, 42, and 61 miles respectively. A good time was had by all. The weather was perfect: warm, breezy and sunny but not too hot on what was the last day of winter. At the end of the ride, the Ancient Order of Hibernians served Irish stew and riders had a chance to win a $100 cash raffle, prized, and even a trip to Ireland. In the above photo, the man in blue, cycles de ORO owner Dale Brown, is heading out to announce the grand send-off.

Let's hope that a generous amount of money was raised for the Down Syndrome Network. Greensboro, its school system, and the Down Syndrome Network are known for fabulous efforts to serve the needs of this special population.  The money will be well spent. If you missed this ride, don't worry, Greensboro cyclists and bicycle shops are always sponsoring rides for worthy causes.

Dogwood Heaven

Sunday, March 20, was the first day of spring. Spring has sprung and, if these dogwood blossoms on Cornwallis Drive are any indication, Greensboro will be in dogwood heaven this week. Dogwood is North Carolina's state flower. Since dogwoods are prevalent and can be found from the coast to the mountains, they are a good choice. Greensboro is no exception: dogwood trees abound here. Dogwood trees like shade and seem to thrive under the canopy of mature trees in neighborhoods with well-established landscapes. Their flowers range from bright white to deep redish-pink. The ones above, still young, have a chartreuse tint. Soon, we'll be enjoying azaleas as well. In our neck of the woods, azaleas and dogwoods go together like cola and moon pies! Since March has been roaring like a lion AND it is almost April, we're going to assume Greensboro has escaped a March ice storm.

If you know someone who is generally housebound, please consider taking him/her for a ride to enjoy this most beautiful time of year in Greensboro. If you are able, schedule a walk or two for yourself. Nothing beats seeing Greensboro's flora in the spring!

Going Down to the River to Pray

Like father, like son... All is not buildings and crosses on Greensboro Daily Photo's Sunday religious posts. Today, we offer this photo of two of the many troops who were reading scripture during the pre-battle church service. Last Sunday morning, just before the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, reenacters were making ready. Others were meeting down by the river to pray.

The weather was beautiful and it was a peaceful lakeside sitting at the Sunday morning church service in Country Park at the encampment. While not quite from the same time period, the spiritual, "Down to the River to Pray" kept coming to mind as we listened. If you want to step out of the 18th century and hear the Alison Krauss version, see this video. CHARTreUSE

Looking for something to do on Saturday? Across the street from yesterday's new student housing compound on Merritt Drive is a consignment store called CHArtReUSe. In the neighborhood of the former Pomona Cotton Mill, a husband and wife team opened the "artistic reuse" store last July. They make some of the artwork that is for sale and represent other, mostly-local artists. CHArtReUSe is an eclectic mix of styles ranging from 1950's bowling alley bright to garden-white shabby chic. Many of the items in the store are repurposed. For example, Christmas cookie tins are cut and assembled into metal flowers for the patio. They take old, tired furniture, paint the wood and reupholster it. As with the items in the store, we're predicting that this part of town is on its way to being transformed.

After milling about CHArTReUSe for a while, we're heading to the Green Bean for the collaborative artists' Hand-to-Hand event from 3-10pm today. We're sharing this photo with our friends at Weekend Reflection who will appreciate our efforts at taking an artsy photo with lots of reflections in the details.

Spring Place, Formerly Pomona Cotton Mill

Spring Place is located at the corner of Spring Garden Street and Meritt Drive.  Spring Place bills itself as "premier off-campus student housing" for the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. They cater to students through their many amenities, lease terms, Internet access and the ability to process leases remotely. For those who don't want to use the bike lane along Spring Garden Street, Spring Place has shuttle service to UNCG and NC A&T. We have photos of completed sections of the 32-acre site; however, today's photo emphasizes the fact that Greensboro still has a fair amount of new construction. The sea of exposed wood smelled of freshly cut lumber-- in spite of the rain. 

This construction represents a new era for this part of town. In order to build Spring Place, The Pomona Cotton Mill, a Greensboro landmark built in 1897, had to be demolished. The Pomona Cotton Mill was a visible reminder of Greensboro's industrial history. The life of the property as a mill spanned 110 years, ending in 1950. Once the mill closed and until 1996, the brick buildings of the former structure had been repurposed as an outlet mall. Now, Pomona Cotton Mill is a mere memory, not likely to be remembered by the new generation of tenants.

The obtuse angle/peak at the top of the photo, mimicking the rooftops, is the newspaper used to protect the camera from the rain. It points to the gray, early-spring sky and is being shared with our friends at Skywatch Friday. Happy sky, dear readers. Happy Skywatch Friday.

 

Architectural Salvage of Greensboro

Architectural Salvage, located at 300 Bellemeade Street in downtown Greensboro, is a place to purchase architectural details for your home or business. It is a non-profit project of Preservation Greensboro, Inc.  Architectural details of properties that are being demolished or renovated are brought here. Volunteer S.W.A.T. teams, more formally known as Saving Worn Architectural Treasures teams, organize the warehouse, prepare items for resale, and work in the showroom. Perhaps because of our Quaker heritage, Greensboro has promoted "reduce, reuse, recycle" long before it became a buzz-phrase. While the A.S. showroom is only open on Fridays and Saturdays, it is well worth a visit if you want to add a little history and provenance to your home.

"I" is for Isaac's Place

For ABC Wednesday, "I" is for Isaac's Place, a short street with 56 houses that begins at Pisgah Church Road, across from Mt. Pisgah Church. Isaac's Place parallels Battleground (near Earthfare) and ends at Martinsville Road near Rice Toyota. This hidden gem of a street is within walking distance to Country Park and the Greenway. Houses on the street range from new construction to older homes like the above home that remind us of the days when Battleground Avenue was a little more rural. This country-looking yard has mature, budding trees and yellow forsythia blooms welcoming spring. The above property even has a raised-bed garden. By late spring, it will really be hidden from the street. This home also comes with neighbors who watched with a concerned look when we were photographing. Hurray for diligent, alert neighbors! It is hard to believe that this well-maintained, rustic retreat is one just house away from Battleground Avenue. 

As we considered "I" for our alphabet street series, we only had 36 streets to choose from. Other residential "I" streets include Independence Road (in Kirkwood) and Immanuel Road (near Hunter Elementary School) with 84 and 113 homes respectively. 

Beware of the Ides of March

Today is March 15th,"The Ides of March." To the Romans, the festive day was dedicated to Mars, the Roman god of war. It is also the day Julius Caesar was killed in 44 B.C. Locally, it was the day of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse in 1781. On this, the 74th day of the year, singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot will perform at War Memorial Auditorium. Oh, and it is one day after 3/14, international Pi day, the math day to celebrate the irrational number approximating 3.14. Children in the Guilford County Schools were having "Pi" day competitions.

The above photo was taken recently on the grounds of Grandover Resort. The plants in the foreground are cattails, typha latifolia. Waterfowl like to nest in cattails (especially Canadian geese). Frogs, salamanders, and fish love the protection afforded by these tall, tough, dense stands of cattails. The fluffy seeds in the tops of the plants are just waiting for the wind or birds to carry them to a new habitat. All parts of this plant are useful and cattails are even edible (read here). Come to our house and we will celebrate the Ides of March by serving up a plate of cattail shoots! Actually, this is not the best time of year to harvest this Native American delicacy! 

Honk if you Love Guards

Happy Monday!

Whether you are more interested in guards on basketball teams or on battlefields, both drove out of town yesterday. If you are a Carolina fan, you are saying, "Wait until next year." If you are are a Duke fan or a reenacter on the British side or the American side of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, you are thinking about next year saying, "Same thing; different year." 

As for the owner of this North Carolina vanity plate, 1FTGUARD, he is celebrating being a fan of reenactments 365 days a year. He is a  foot guard which makes him part of a senior infantry regimen. Foot guards can be distinguished by the spacing and arrangement of the buttons on their tunic. The oldest regiment of continuously serving foot guards are the Coldstream Guards and they have been serving since the 1650's.

We don't know about you but as for us, it seemed like February would never end and that March is almost over!

Friendship Community Church of God

Friendship Community Church of God is located on Guilford College Road near West Market Street. They also double as Myanmar (Burma) Church and, on Friday and Saturdays, they are the "Iglesia de Dios Vida Eterna." While the church embraces people of all ethnicities, for the ethnically Burmese or Hispanic, they offer special services. The congregations don't appear to have a website; they do, however, have a new Facebook page (here). As is the case with many churches in Greensboro, it is hard to tell if Friendship Community is affiliated with a traditional religion (like Catholicism or Baptist) or of they are a modern non-affiliated religion. They don't appear to have religious insignia, like crosses. The facility stays busy all weekend!

2011 ACC Basketball Tournament in Greensboro

This weekend, while people are reenacting the Battle of Guilford Court House, others are flocking to the Coliseum in Greensboro to watch ACC  Tournament basketball games. By tomorrow, we'll know the 2011 Champs. For now, we're reposting the photo of this window from a couple of years ago. Not only are the games here this year, Greensboro is home to the Atlantic Coast Conference. As their website states, "(t)he Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C. with seven charter members- Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest." Today the conference has expanded to eleven member schools and generates some pretty intense rivalries.

As of last week, Greensboro is now home to the ACC Hall of Champions. One of the highlights of the brand-new, state-of-the art facility is a 4-ft. 360-degree video globe that shares conference highlights with visitors. We'll try to get a photo of the new facility but NOT during tournament madness. Getting near the venue during the busiest weekend of the year is not advisable.

Nathanael Greene Rides Again

Our city's namesake Nathanael Greene is assembling his troops at the round-a-bout downtown on McGee Street. In less than 24 hours, the 230th reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse will be in full swing. For one brief weekend, General Greene will step off his pedestal and come to life. In the American Revolutionary War, Greene was a major general for the Continental Army. The big battle in our area happened on March 15, 1781. Although Cornwallis beat Greene at the battle, it was a turning point in the war. Presently, the battlefield is soaked; however, Saturday and Sunday are supposed to be sunny. Let's hope so because wet wool is neither comfortable nor aromatic! If you are local, you have a great opportunity to interact with history! If you are driving down Battleground and hear gun shots, don't panic!

Battle of Guilford Courthouse This Weekend

This weekend, Guilford County will be reliving the late 18th century and the Revolutionary War. Reenactors will be pouring into Greensboro right and left for the Reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. If you are anywhere near Old Battleground or New Garden Road at Guilford Courthouse National Military Park, you can be part of the 230th anniversary weekend. Already, the Revolutionary War Lecture Series is in full swing. Tonight at 7pm Historian Randell Jones will present "Before they Were Heroes at King's Mountain" at the park's visitor center. Call 336-288-1776 (like that catchy phone number???) to ensure there will be a seat for you. Same time/same place on Friday, you can attend "Old Ninety-Six, Crossroads and Revolution."

The schedule for this weekend is filled with camp activities, battles, crafts, music, guided walking tours, lectures, performances and demonstrations. So much to do here; so much to photograph. Call ahead as events might be cancelled or relocated due to weather. The above photo is from last year and the haze is smoke from a nearby battle that was in process. 'H' is for Hobbs Road

Today is ABC Wednesday and 'H' is for Hobbs Road. The brick, colonial house in the photo is typical of the houses on Hobbs and and is actually the first house on Hobbs as it begins at Beverly Place near Friendly Center. Far from a straight line, Hobbs winds through the city; it is the road that grew and grew and now measures 4.2 miles. As Greensboro's borders changed, Hobbs got extended. Crossing over Friendly, Holden, Westridge, Jefferson, past Temple Emanuael, the American Hebrew Academy, and Kathleen Clay Library, Hobbs becomes Garden Lake Drive once it crosses New Garden. Hobbs has so much to share with the Greensboro. David Caldwell Park and Interpretive Museum, Tanger Bicentennial Garden, and The Bogg Garden are all located there.

While Hobbs is a somewhat busy road, most of its houses are placed comfortably back from the street. Of all 246 streets in Greensboro beginning with the letter 'H,' Hobbs has the most houses: 231. Last year, we featured the Easter Bunny's house on Hobbs and, if you are interested, here are our previous ABC Wednesday offerings. Noble Academy on Horse Pen Creek

Beep, beep, move over... out with the old, in with the new,. Noble Academy is GROWING and on the move. Formerly known as Guilford Academy, Noble Academy is located on Horse Pen Creek Road, near the Spears YMCA. On February 8th the school broke ground for their new building. The 20th-century, cabin-like building above is being moved off of the property to make way for the new 21st-century facility. We imagine they're planning to move the above structure in the night when there isn't much traffic.

The private, K-12 school caters to students who have learning differences. At Noble, students learn in classrooms with a small teacher student ratio (1:8) with a traditional curriculum, methodology and strategies that accommodate students with learning differences. As their website reports, Nobles' teachers are experts in their content area who are experienced in working with students with ADD/LD. They've been dreaming of this expansion for nearly a decade and business is booming.

This is just one of many changes in store for Horse Pen Creek Road. Have you driven there lately? 

Happy Birthday, Jane

This weekend, we celebrated the birthday of a dear friend and faithful reader of Greensboro Daily Photo. If you are local and follow our blog, chances are you were introduced to the site by Jane. Jane loves living in Greensboro and learning everything she can about her city. She reads the blog diligently, helps us research information, calls immediately if she finds a misspelling or slip of grammar. She also comes up with great ideas about places to photograph and has been known to join us for afternoons of photographing Greensboro. Everyone needs a friend like Jane.

Jane is also a fan of all things French, an inference that can be made upon seeing the cake above. The Eiffel Tower/Fleur de Lis cake is the colors of her soleil yellow Quimper/French dinnerware. Since Jane's birthday comes so close to the anniversary of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, next year, we're planning a Nathanael Greene in the round-a-bout cake. Get out the blue and bronze cake gel. Seriously, readers like you and Jane make our 365-days-a-year effort all worthwhile.

Magnolia Street Baptist Church

A block away from Cone Hospital, Magnolia Street Baptist Church is located on the corner of Magnolia Street and Wendover Avenue. The church is situated at the northern boundary of Fisher Park right on Wendover-- which is visible in this photo.  According to photos on their website, Magnolia St. Baptist was founded in 1909 and the current sanctuary was built in the 1950's. In the sanctuary, there are 8 large stained glass windows.

Not much is available online about the church. We did learn that UNCG's library holdings include a vertical file collection index with an archived a Greensboro Daily News article about Magnolia Street Baptist. The article, dated November 10, 1940, tells the history of the church. We encourage the church to scan a copy of the article and link it to their website so that we can all access it. History matters!  In the spirit of 21st century communication, the church has a FACEBOOK page with a growing list of fans.

Gate City Roller Girls 2011

Hurray, the weekend has rolled in. Last night's First Friday in Downtown Greensboro was a little quiet. However, the Gate City Roller Girls were out in full force. Again, they rolled onto the scene when we least expected it and volunteered to pose for a photo. Founded in 2010,they are a fun-loving group of women are dedicated to athleticism and roller skating fun. They are part of Greensboro's first official Roller Derby League. This fast-paced, contact-team sport is fun for women of all ages. They practice at least three times a week and are up for a workout indoors or out.

If this weekend is nice, how about getting out for a little roller skating fun. Thing spring! We're posting this with weekend reflection. Look at that reflecting off of those knee pads and beyond! Peace on Earth, Radiating from Guilford College

Inspired by our weekly Skywatch Friday posts, this photo is an effort to extend the art of Patrick Dougherty's 20-ft. art instillation on the campus of Guilford College. The camera is on the ground pointing to the sky through the round, maze of saplings that Dougherty bent into a beautiful work of art. See a 3-minute video about Dougherty's creative process, here. 

From saplings to Peace signs, to the sky... and beyond. Why?

Guilford College is known for its fine liberal arts education with emphasis on social responsibility. Peace and efforts for enhancing its students' global perspective radiate from the campus.  Guilford College was founded by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1837. Quakers are known for their tradition of pacifism (read more here). So, to Guilford College, to Quakers, to Patrick Dougherty, to the City Daily Photo Community that does SO MUCH to bring the world together, and to YOU our readers: PEACE! Grandover Resort

More "G's" for the week, Grandover Parkway intersects with Guilford College Road near yesterday's farmhouse. The imposing, literally-grand, 1,500 acre Grandover Resort is visible from I-85 in the southwest end of Greensboro. Grandover Resort was built to feel castle-like and to evoke a European sense of history. It endeavors to be grand in every way: 45,000 square feet of meeting space, 36 holes of golf, full spa services, and more. Opening in the late 1990's, Grandover was a 30-year dream realized for Greensboro's most prolific developer Joseph Koury. Koury is also known for building the Four Seasons Mall and Convention Center, over 8,000 homes, 14 residential neighborhoods, and seven shopping venues (Koury Corp.).

While we have not had the opportunity to stay there, we would be negligent to omit Grandover from Greensboro Daily Photo. Grandover is North Carolina's effort to be a destination vacation in much the same manner as West Virginia's Greenbrier Resort. This post is long overdue!

"G" is for Guilford College Road

Big old farmhouses surrounded by lots of pastures, trees, and fencing; this is the Guilford College Road of yesteryear. Today, Guilford College Road is much more commercial and some parts of it are divided four-lane highway. Today is ABC Wednesday and "G" is for Guilford College Road, which stretches from Vickery Chapel Road, just south of I-85 in the Jamestown/High Point end of the county and continues over High Point Road, Wendover, I-40, Across Market Street and Friendly Avenue ending at the confluence of Ballinger, New Garden, and Fleming Roads. Yes, Guilford College has an entrance on Guilford College Road! From beginning to end, Guilford College is about ten miles long. In this long stretch of road, there are only 149 homes. Another "G," Groometown, boasts 261 houses, the most for this letter of the alphabet-- of which there are 194 streets listed in Greensboro.

Stickhenge at Guilford College

Greensboro and Guilford College have been graced with a Patrick Dougherty instillation. Dougherty combines his love of nature with carpentry skills to create organic sculptures with sticks. Dougherty, whose home base is Chapel Hill, NC,  has been making these structures worldwide since about 1980. To date, he has made over 200. The one at Guilford College, constructed of locally-harvested saplings, is reminiscent of England's Stonhenge. It is twenty feet tall, round, maze-like and inviting to walk through. Stickhenge (our title) is installed in the very spot where the community enjoys MUSEP/Eastern Music Festival concerts on Sundays in the summer (see here).

Today is the first of the month which means theme day for the 1,500-ish City Daily Photo sites. The theme for March is "your favorite part of town." At Greensboro Daily Photo, we don't have a FAVORITE part of town, per se. Our favorite part of town changes based on what is happening and what we uncover. For March, we're picking Guilford College. This is such a dynamic campus that provides a quality education in a surrounding of old oak trees, brick buildings, great music and breathtaking art. Great thinking and creativity abound at Guilford College!
