Locals will recognize this farm on West Friendly Avenue, just past Guilford College Road. The snow really evokes yesteryear. This is an image of what Friendly used to look like-- before townhouses, apartment complexes and Friends' Home West sprang up. All around this property are modern buildings; however, this barn and silo are reminders of all the farms that used to be in the area. If you are interested in rural farm land & related NC links, here is an interesting link. Guilford County is the third largest of North Carolina's 100 counties and, until the last few years, seemed considerably rural (as evidenced by all of the roads ending in _______ Dairy Road [Gallimore Dairy Road, Carlson Dairy Road, Thacker Dairy Road, Williams Dairy Road, etc.]) . To learn more about preserving open space in Guilford County, this is the link for you!
This Skywatch Friday post is our last photo for 2010. As you count down to New Year's Eve, please remember to be safe. Likely, the GDP family will be seated in the living room watching the ball drop from Times Square in NYC as we plan our year-in-review post for January 1st. All of the City Daily Photo sites are encouraged to post their best photo of 2010 tomorrow. Stop back and see what we selected!
The snow covered view looks awesome....

You are lucky to have such nice old farms nearby.
My daughter and her family always like to escape the loud celebrations in Sydney and go off to some place in nature to welcome the new year. They are driving 3 1/2 hours through Australia in order to do a 3-day farm stay. The kids will love it.
Thanks for your kind words and the same to you.
Happy, healthy, peaceful new year to you and D.

This is the old Coble farm. Isn't it pretty??! My grandfather did lots of "cow trading" with the Cobles. My father recently told me that this farm is slated for demolition so that Friends Homes West can expand. I think it's a shame. I'll see what else Daddy knows about it.

Thanks, Emily! We knew we could count on you. For search and archival purposes, we're going back in and changing the title to "Coble" farm. Hate to hear that it is slated for demolition. Other than Guilford College and Friends Meeting with the cemetery, this farm is about it for the charm of Old West Friendly. If you hear of other places slated for the chopping block. Let us know and we'll try to get there before they are gone. We just made it to Newman Machine this year before it was demolished. We do need growth and progress; however, we also need something that hints of our history of farm, dairy, and horse country.
Happy New Year Everyone!

I know, I hate to see these places fall, but I guess change (progress?) must occur. Our family farm on New Garden fell in the late 80's /90's. The only remaining memory for me is a magnificent old oak planted the year my grandfather was born (1901) and the magnolia tree standing beside it that he planted when he inhereted the farm. My father discussed the preservation of these two trees with the developer. They kindly roped off the area and did preserve them. I collected some magnolia leaves from this tree to decorate my house this holiday season.
There was much local debate about the property sale at the time...many public hearings, etc. Even the family was split over the decision to sell or not. Our community must work together to delicately balance our need for progress and preservation.

Happy New Year. Great shot. It is sad we are losing so much rural land.

What a lovely scene, all covered with snow! I pictured bundled up folks with snowshoes and a couple of big dogs bounding along by their side for some reason!
I am saddened to hear the farm is slated for demo but it is motivational for me to get out and take some photos of places nearly gone very soon.
Almost all the dairy farms are gone from So Cal, just in the last 15 years we lost great #s of them to new home builders and now many of those homes are sitting empty.
Some of the Dairy families did not close up but took their herds to Texas or Nor Cal or Idaho.
Have a great New Year weekend ahead!

Happy New Year!
The only points to befriend winter for me are the ability to make so beautiful shots and to breath fresh winter air (I hope that day was not windy)).
And thank you for your warmest comments and attention.
