Today is Sacred Sunday and we're taking you inside the Dormition of the Theotokos Greek Orthodox Church at the corner of Friendly Avenue and Westridge Road. The Greek Food Festival at the church is in full swing (including today from 12-6pm). Not only do they have yummy food and great entertainment, they also give church tours, which are actually Orthodoxy 101 sessions. The Greek word 'orthodox' means correctly believing and, the church is approximately 2,000 years old. The Greek Orthodox Church has not changed much over the years.
The Greek Festival was very purposefully picked to be this weekend because of the Holy Days celebrating the Raising of the Cross. The feast days celebrate the bringing outside the cross of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in 335 (read more here). At any rate, we encourage you to go and enjoy some great Greek food with or without learning about the religion. See our previous posts on the church here and here.
Some wonderful colors here. Enjoy the food too.

I have been to two churches today. Almost no activity there at all, no feel of Sacred Sunday. Good that Greeks do.

Nice to see inside.
I hope they do the liturgy in Greek still.
So the priest wears a collar like the Catholic priests?

Very cool photo of the Greek Church! We should create a "Sacred Sunday" logo to use to Sunday church(y) postings!
