Lady Banks Rose is a species rose from China, having been in cultivation since the late 1700's. While roses can be temperamental and hard to grow, the Lady Banks has many outstanding attributes: disease resistant and draught tolerant, long lived, fast growing, and thornless to name a few. This sprawling, ambling rose loves a sturdy fence, as seen in the photo above. The rose is named after the wife of Sir Joseph Banks, once head of the Royal Horticultural Society of Great Britain.
We decided to post a photo of this Sunset Hills beauty TODAY since, just west of this mature Lady Banks Rose, at The Greek Orthodox Church, the Herb Society of America is hosting their annual plant sale. Last year, we featured the event here (capturing a faithful reader-- or two). We are entering the season of plant sales and we urge you to plant now so that later in the summer you can harvest the fruits of your labor. As an additional point about the Lady Banks rose, the largest rose in the world is a Lady Banks Rose in Tombstone Arizona. It is known as the Shady Lady, covers 8,000 square feet, and has been thriving since 1855! Plant a Lady Banks today for your great, great, great, great grandchildren!!!
A great idea.

What I miss most in the heavy air of the big city is the fragrance of these roses, the aroma of the spring. Great shot.
