As the sun rises over the encampment in Country Park along Lawndale Drive, this American Continental Army reenacter is getting ready for his long day of battle. In the photo, we see an early generation of the shelter half or two man pup tent which has been "(t"he fundamental unit of shelter for the U.S. army in the field-- since the Civil War".... Somehow these primitive cotton pyramids managed to keep people dry through a very rainy night last weekend.
This is the final in a series of four photos showcasing the reenactment of the Battle of Guilford Courthouse this past weekend. From pup tents to full military regalia, from parlor musicians to drum and bugle corps, to battles, for 48 hours, one of America's smallest military parks came to life.
I can almost hear Irving Berlin's "Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning" as I view the row of pup tents. You have brought the re-enactment to life this week for those of us who weren't able to attend.

What a wonderful series! Black and white was the perfect choice for this last shot.

These do remind me of the canvas tent I had as a kid. Hated the smell, but loved playing in it! Mine, however, was green, not white.
