The state flower of North Carolina grows on a tree, the dogwood! The locally abundant dogwood blossom, pictured above, was approved by the North Carolina Legislature to be the official state flower on March 15, 1941. It beat out the daisy, goldenrod, flame azalea, pine cone, and Venus flytrap. As of today, in Greensboro, the dogwoods are a few days away from being in peak bloom. Soon, neighborhoods throughout the city will be full of white and pink dogwood blooms. Also on the verge of blooming are the azaleas. If your neighborhood has a spectacular showing of azaleas and dogwoods this week, please tell us about it in the comments below. These two plants are usually found together as they take the same soil conditions, they bloom about the same time, they are different heights and shapes. The park at the First Presbyterian Church on North Elm Street will have dogwoods and azaleas in bloom any day now.
On another note, we're participating in Monochrome Monday; hence, the black and white!
You have the done the subject proud. Not easy treating flowers well in B&W.

That's a beautiful shot of the dogwood. It works so well in monochrome.

I had to laugh, you are of course correct, I meant to write That's my World. Glad you mentioned it because I have fixed it now.

Hi there!
Black and white really gives an air of sadness and nostalgia in photos. Wonder how those flowers look in colored? :)
Really glad to know its history!

Moved from Alabama to Texas a few years ago and I really miss the dogwood trees. One of favorite. They are beautiful.

I've been loving the dogwood and azalea combo in bloom the last few weeks. The neighborhood on Westridge road (north of the Greek and Baptist churches) has one of the most impressive displays I have seen in my limited wanderings!
